Sunderland (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Watching that as a Gooner reminded me of our match there. Sunderland are a tough team and I said at the time it was our toughest game of the season just because they are relentless and put their bodies on the line.

You should have won just like we should have (Savinho simply has to put his chance away) but at the same time you have to admire Sunderland's effort and spirit. Like Barcodes away (and Etihad away for us) it's one of those matches you're just happy happens only once a season.
We beat them 3-0 at the Ethiad and they had a stronger team then….

A fair result, I thought.

Sunderland had the better of the first half, but we were definitely the better in the second.

Too many chances squandered, though. Credit to the Black Cats for defending well, but we had more than enough of the ball in and around their penalty area to have put the game away.

It’s clear to see why the SoL is a fortress this season.

2 big away games and Arsenal 2 home games over the Christmas period ?
Look, I know we all play each other, but the fixtures can control the form and 2 away over Christmas is hard.

City today just looked cooked and sloppy and out on our feet. Sunderland are a hard team to beat on their own patch. You have to take a point and move on and no matter who played shit or should not have played, a point is all we are going to get and sometimes it's a good point like tonight

Not really arsed to be honest.

We didn't play well, they executed a game plan to nick a point and Haaland had one of his most invisible performances of the season.

Hopefully Nico G is okay. Rodri even in limited action barely looked rusty. Need to hunker down, season half gone and no one can doubt months ago that's they wouldn't be happy at how far we've come and where we are in the table.

Semenyo just seems a no brainer as neither Savi or Doku are a sure bet finishing especially the former... He looked better tonight but that early 2nd half chance was a nutshell for me of his worth to us. Semenyo's goal threat, strength and long throws are simply facets we do not have from the aforementioned although Doku at his best is virtually undroppable.

Savinho should not start another game for us, in fact we should sell him tmrw.

2 fucking guilt edge chances one after another, we looked much better when he went off.

Haaland and Foden had terrible games too.

Having said that we had enough chances to score several times.

4 points from 6 in away games isn't bad but tbh, Sunderland were crap so we should have won that.

4 minutes added on is cheating, the 3 red shirts get double that in those circumstances.
We didn't look better because Savinho went off. He was our best player when on the pitch. He looked fast, sharp and was beating the full back with ease. He was also working hard to get back. We looked better because Gvardiol and Rodri came on. It had absolutely nothing to do with Savinho going off.
He should have taken at least one of the chances he had. But, I thought he played well and the amount of stick he gets is totally unwarranted.

Doku was sensational when he came on and Cherki had a good game and always a threat. Not sure what game you were watching.

Don't know about that. Got to the bye line plenty of times but aside from one blocked shot nothing came off for Doku at all and his crosses were regularly cut out easily enough.

Don't think either him or Savinho were particularly poor tonight, though both had their faults.

It's just one of those games. Done enough to win it, never took chances. Had total control seconds half which was good.

Some in here need to chill, imo.

You'll never win anything with kids, or putting effort in playing only one half of the game, which this team has been doing for the third season now.

That first half looked like there is only one side was in a title race and it was not us for sure.

Just another one of those games where we look preposterous once the opposition hits certain intensity levels, and they have missed 8 players tonight.

We are waiting here for some epic Ars meltdown even they are not capable of, otherwise this was never a title race.

Fuming at that. Another day we score 4 or 5 - one of those games where you just know it’s not going to go in.

Those Sunderland fans are a right bunch of whinging fuckers, Christ.

Good to have God back.
I was talking to a bunch of them in the the pub before our game with them a few weeks back. Decent lads, but they they spent most of the conversation (I was sat with them an hour and a half watching the early game) banging on about how corrupt the PL is, how Newcastle pay the refs, how Sunderland never get any decisions and every game is a disgrace against them.

Too many passengers. Foden, O’Reilly, Savinho, Haaland, Ake, Gonzales having poor games. Dias bullied yet again by a below-average striker. Gvardiol and Rodri did more in 20 minutes than most did in 93. I’ll take Rodri being back as a consolatory positive.

Sunderland played their hearts out, first to every tackle, fighting for every half chance, despite so many players out at AFCON and to injuries. They had a brilliant plan to crowd out Haaland, with Mukiele playing a blinder.

We’d have definitely scored in those lost 2 seconds.

Don’t know what some of you were watching but that was absolutely wank.

When you come here you know what you’re getting. An old fashioned, rugged, meat and potatoes opponent. You have to fight, snarl, hustle, and blag your way through it. Too many of them today were far too nice and lacked bollocks, Haaland being the worst for it.

We are absolutely fucking desperate for Semenyo. We had fuck all goal threat on the bench there today. No goalscorer.

Brilliant to see Rodders back though. Huge positive.

4 points is nothing to worry about at this stage but the signs are there that we have little room for error and need to add to the squad this window.
Agree, we have very little physicality in this team and we get bullied far too easily. Semenyo can't come quickly enough on that right side, then get Cherki centrally
