Sunderland post match thread

Infinitely better than what Pellegrini served up simply on the grounds we had a plan and the players had clearly been coached.

You enjoy your new seat in family stand?

Was nice for the kids! Took my 3 and 3 of their mates today and my old man! Think I broke the record for most money spent on fruit pastilles in a single game. Robbing bastads!!

Cheaper in 93.20!!

Really enjoyed that. Bollocks to the negative media twats, empty seat brigade and people that haven't watched the game who pass comment. Whilst we weren't razor sharp, we played some wonderful stuff at times with some great passing and moving deep in midfield. Yes, we conceded a sloppy goal but this system is totally different to anything we've seen before at city, that goes for the players too. It isn't going to happen overnight.

More positives - Kolarov looked very decent and has obviously been listening. Sterling looked full of energy and wanted to make things happen. Silva was excellent and stones looks promising. Fern was as assured and consistent as ever.

When this clicks were gonna smash the living shit out of everyone.
Completely agree, well said

I agree as well, however if today's performance (at times, may I add) is against better opposition we will get the living shit smashed out of us as well
Yeah, that's a fair point, although I think Pep is too cute for that. I don't think we'd have gone as strong on the tactical changes if we'd have played Chelsea or a team of that ilk today.

I'm feeling optimistic though! Above all, I was just happy to see everyone to a man put a shift in!

A good hard-fought win. Much to be happy about.
Started fantastically. Very intelligent and quick. Superb forward header Fernandinho, definite penalty and Sergio slots it home. Our play seemed to deteriorate as the game went on and they scored a fair goal. We did have a few opportunities on the break but weren't quite sharp enough. Really impressed by the end of the game though; fought hard, played well, Navas delivers a brilliant cross and we get the winner.
Silva played beautiful, Stones composed and commanding the ball, but will give Sterling motm as he won the pen and tried to use his pace which I love to see.
It's amazing seeing our team play the Pep way; full-backs well inside, Sagna looked #10 at the end! So happy to get the win and excited for the next one.

when this squad get's to gel in 5 to 10 games and maybe learn after a defeat then we can really say we have something special. but today the setup was a joy to see every player sticking to a plan and a new manager setup like nothing we have not seen in england before both fullbacks was holding midfield players at times

Yea me too,and equally as chuffed/relieved as Pep that we got the win

I wasn't there so this is all speculation but... As far as the "flat" atmosphere is concerned I would think that some of it had to do with people watching the tactics, positioning and movement of the players more attentively than previous years. There was so much talk the last few months about how we were going to set up, play and approach the game philosophically. My guess is that instead of singing or yelling something at Defoe many of the match goers were instead quietly contemplating why Clichy and Bac were playing in the middle of the pitch and observing how Stones + Kolarov would start the attack by dribbling forward, passing, then making a run while Fernandino dropped back to fill the space.

Could be way off... But that's my theory on the "flat" atmosphere

Really interesting game although I could have done without the nerves the Defoe goal caused! Thought Stones, Fernandinho and Sterling did particularly well.

One issue I had was our 5 attacking players getting too on top of the Sunderland defence. When we had the ball, before the final 10 minutes, there was tons of space between our fullback midfield and Silva and KDB in the attacking midfield roles. Eventually Gundogan should revel in that room but in the meantime Silva and/or KDB should be hanging a bit further back from the front 3 whilst the attack builds.
