Supermarket fuel v branded fuel ?

For years I've usually gone for the cheapest fuel and is mostly that sold by the big supermarkets. I've heard that some supermarkets, Sainsburys in particular are known to water their fuel down. I don't know If this is true but I've seen plenty of exhausts blasting water out of the back box on setting off.

I do about 40k miles a year in my company diesel Ford transit custom and I am filling up more nowadays with more expensive branded fuels. I have noticed the engine is running quieter and I seem to be getting slightly more miles from a full tank. The difference of filling a full tank on supermarket/branded fuel Is about 6-8 quid.

What are you filling up with and why?

Watering down fuel? That's a ridiculous idea. Any significant amount of water would cause loads of problems. The thought of such a large scale criminal act going undetected by authorities is unimaginable.

Catalytic converters turn unburned hydrocarbons into CO2 and water - that's what you see coming out of the exhaust.

Thought I'd jump in this thread and ask the question... Is there any difference or at least a noticeable difference in the quality of the "premium" fuels which are offered beside the "standard" fuels?

And if anyone here knows their Onions on this subject, which diesel fuel is best?

I tend to fill up at Tesco due to proximity to my home and price however I'd be willing to pay more for say BP/Shell if it was better.

Or Maybe a station which Sheikhy Boy supplies the most too??

Fuck all difference and don't let the moon landing deniers tell you any different.

Fuck all difference in standard petrol and diesel mate but the super unleaded and super diesels are a step up in octane and cetane as well as the additives packages they have, especially if you are driving a high powered turbo car where its needed to stop "plinking" and even in a normal family motor, whilst you wont need the higher octane which is 97 and above for super unleaded, the additives will help clean your engine better and give you a better MPG according to many studies although it isnt ridiculous amounts i will admit.

supermarkets are allowed to use vegetable oil in diesel and methanol in petrol. it reduces the tax levy. Methanol is less powerful than petrol and also readily attracts water from the atmosphere which then causes rust problems to petrol tanks. Biodiesel has no downsides except it should be cheaper

Christ almighty lol.

I work on a refinery, its all the same stuff leaving us and going to various forecourts doesn't matter if it's Tesco, Shell or Sainsburys. People are right in saying that you'll get a better spec in Cetane and Octane in the premium stuff but it's not going to have a massive effect and isn't worth the extra pence a litre in fuel economy in my opinion. You're better off driving more efficiently yourself.

It's been a few years since I've worked in the area in regards to biodiesel etc but there are downsides from what I gather it can have a corrosive effect on the fuel system and from what I last heard BMW and I think Audi were recommended it not be used in their vehicles.

The average local butcher is no better than a supermarket. You end up paying more for the same stuff. Morrisons has an excellent butchers dept, better than all but the high end shops.
You'll find butcher aren't much dearer than supermarkets, it s better quality too and probably local. Theres a reason any decent restaurant will always use a butcher for supplies.

Completely agree mate other than for high powered turbo motors where the super unleaded is needed and often in the manufacturers spec to stop engine "plinking".
