Support band you saw that blew away the headliner

I wasn't there but my friend's uncle was. His name was Norman Weiss and he was an executive with GAC who were a US talent agency.

He went to Paris to see headliner Trini Lopez, who was one of their artists. But the support band blew him away and he pestered everyone he could to get them over to the USA, which he eventually did.

The band was called The Beatles.

Went to see the Pretenders when I was at Keele university in about 1980 but the support act blew them away and had to be dragged off the stage. It was UB40.

The best of it was they were just having their first hit and used the students union to practice for their upcoming tour so you could go and have a burger and a pint and watch them practice.

Airborne, they were supporting a band called Black stone Cherry. It may have been just the volume Airborne played at and damaged some hearing a bit. but BSC seemed very very muted after.

Took my young daughter to see Pussycat Dolls who were predictably dreadful.
Support act was Lady Gaga, she was absolutely incredible.

Japan supporting Blue Öyster Cult, Free Trade Hall 1978.
OK they went down like a lead balloon for most there, but opened my ears and eyes

Van Halen with Black Sabbath also gets another vote.

Dan Reed Network supporting Bon Jovi around 89 too.
Only went for DRN.

Both Alison Moyet and Terence Trent Darby knocked spots off Bowie at Maine Road, glass spider tour.

Loved Japan and DRN. Saw DRN supporting The Stones at Maine Road. That debut album was brilliant. Jagger was never afraid of picking the hottest bands around to support them: ZZ Top, Van Halen, G n R.
Sadly, for DRN, grunge was just around the corner.

Pretty sure that was my first gig. Creep was the stand out track of whole night.

December 4 1993

This was the standard setlist for the following night...

I still can't believe Dan played in our home for my wife's 50th birthday :-)

1978 Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath, absolutely wiped the floor with Sabbath!!

Yeah, I saw them at the Manchester Apollo. I love Sabbath but VH were the best proper support act (as opposed to special guests etc) that I ever saw. Mind you, best gig I ever saw was VH headlining t Madison Sq Garden in 1981.

The other time I saw a headliner blown away by the support act was also at the Apollo and it was Nils Lofgren being supported by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

TP&TH became one of the world’s great live bands.

Nils did join one of the greatest live bands and his guitar solo spot in “Because The Night” is just one of the most spine tingling things you can see at a gig.
