I personally think it depends on the circumstances. Just choosing a ‘premier league team’, is nonsense.
My family are from Lincoln. Growing up, Lincoln were, and still are, my team first and foremost. However, when my Dad was younger, his best mate was from Manchester. One week, he would travel with him to watch City, the next, they’d watch Lincoln. For many years, he had season tickets at both, and took us whenever we could go along to City, too. Then we had season tickets at both, and then one or the other. My dad has seen more City games than most, and still attends Lincoln regularly.
There’s a real affinity through memories, ups, downs, family, friends and places for both clubs and a lot of time and dedication put into both teams. You could argue with me about who I choose as ‘my’ club and why, but Dad’s been there through thin, then thick, with both teams.
