Weird season. Began with a takeover that looked like it would never happen due to Thaksin's assets being frozen, after Ray Ranson pulled out, which would have seen Allardyce as manager. Deal with Thaksin goes through. Turns out he was disposed in a coup, is on the run, and has a pretty shady human rights record. Sportswashing before it became cool. Likes to be called Sinatra because nobody can pronounce his surname. Frank Sinatra music gets played throughout the home friendly against Valencia, where a certain David Silva scores the winner (whatever happened to him?). Very promising start to the season, Petrov tearing down the left, Elano playing like a mini version of Zico, Richards and Dunne solid at the back, Johnson being described as the new Colin Bell. Life is good. Then out of the blue, we lose 6-0 away to Chelsea. Winter doesn't bode well, Elano's form starts to dip, Johnson injured. Then we win away at Old Trafford. Historic and glorious. Mixed results and performances follow that victory, as well as trouble behind the scenes. Protest at Anfield, and one of the best City songs I've heard (leave our Sven alone!). Season finishes with an 8-1 loss to Middlesbrough, qualifying for Europe via the fair play league (does that still exist?) Sven being sacked and the club nearly going bust. Looking back, a pretty surreal season.
