Sven

Weird season. Began with a takeover that looked like it would never happen due to Thaksin's assets being frozen, after Ray Ranson pulled out, which would have seen Allardyce as manager. Deal with Thaksin goes through. Turns out he was disposed in a coup, is on the run, and has a pretty shady human rights record. Sportswashing before it became cool. Likes to be called Sinatra because nobody can pronounce his surname. Frank Sinatra music gets played throughout the home friendly against Valencia, where a certain David Silva scores the winner (whatever happened to him?). Very promising start to the season, Petrov tearing down the left, Elano playing like a mini version of Zico, Richards and Dunne solid at the back, Johnson being described as the new Colin Bell. Life is good. Then out of the blue, we lose 6-0 away to Chelsea. Winter doesn't bode well, Elano's form starts to dip, Johnson injured. Then we win away at Old Trafford. Historic and glorious. Mixed results and performances follow that victory, as well as trouble behind the scenes. Protest at Anfield, and one of the best City songs I've heard (leave our Sven alone!). Season finishes with an 8-1 loss to Middlesbrough, qualifying for Europe via the fair play league (does that still exist?) Sven being sacked and the club nearly going bust. Looking back, a pretty surreal season.

I remember before the season started I put a bet on us double the Rags I was so confident in him,a nice 17/1 winner.

Correct but he carried on playing him when was injured. The lad had to ask to be subbed in the end.
He agreed to join him on loan at Leicester, so couldn’t have had much resentment against the decision

A lot of other factors led to Johnson’s untimely retirement.

Personal demons which he has thankfully conquered and now running multiple businesses

Went to most home games under Pearce and it was grim awful to watch. Then at 17 got my season ticket on my own in the south stand watching Sven. It was brilliant the Elano Newcastle game was mint, made us believe again after the dross we suffered under Pearce.

Also a top shagger.

As someone else has said, he had no Plan B. Once other clubs had us sussed then we were well beaten. That second half of the season decline was very troubling.

I’m assuming 8-1 v Middlesbrough is our record Premier League defeat?
PL, yes. All-time it’s our fifth biggest defeat.

10-2 v Small Heath
9-1 v Everton
8-0 v Burton Wanderers
8-0 v Wolves

I thought Sven was ace. That first game against west ham when no one knew what to expect with a lot of signings people didn't really know about and we went out and went for it, with a decent assist from our Ned if I remember right?

It was an exciting time all of a sudden, playing good football with a Brazilian international in Elano, and exciting players like Petrov and Geovanni. Michael Johnsons broke through, we did the double over united and the win at Trafford was a bit of a masterclass considering the tools available to him.

Going off the posts in this thread I've obviously forgotten a lot of the shitter stuff about his season with us! But it was pretty exciting on the whole for me looking back
West ham away 1st match of the season was electric
All seemed to be start of something fantastic, then we beat utd at home ( after beating derby at home midweek ,Michael Johnson tidy goal) with Giovanni long distance belter ,Tevez missing a sitter for utd..which made fergie stand up to celebrate ..then sit down embarrassed..

Those first 3 games( 3 clean sheets iirc) were magic ..straight after the Pearce era
