It wasn't a draw here and there. It was a consistent inability to beat any of the top 7 teams and a dogged insistence on playing some players who were consistently not delivering.
That's 12 games without a win. We lost 10 games and drew 9 - that's precisely half our games with dropped points. 15 points behind the leaders.
The fact that other teams also didn't do very well is cold comfort, it's still a large failing on our part.
We talk about injuries and CL presence, but that's precisely why we're supposed to have strength in depth. That strength in depth was demonstrably a myth this season as evidenced in the results.
I'm not blaming Pellegrini for it all, as a large number of players need to look at themselves for their part in events this season, but equally, he's the man at the helm and takes his fair percentage of the blame. Equally, by that reckoning, those above Pellegrini also need to take their share of responsibility too. If it's truly a collaborative effort from top to bottom, then we've failed in multiple areas and at multiple levels.
In many ways, I think a lot of fans had SOME sympathy for Pellegrini when they saw the level of commitment from some players. We might not like his tactics or seemingly favouritism towards some players, but we could also see that some players were strolling through games - for which there's no excuse.
Thankfully, things weren't as bad as they could have been and we can put this season down to an uninspiring one and move on, but if there's a repeat of it, we need to start looking further up the ladder for changes.
