Swansea (QF) Post Match thread

I've only seen what everyone else has seen, but IMO he was offside.

Sergio's foot/leg is offside but his torso is in line...

It's by no means a clear cut offside and the officials are supposed to give the benefit of doubt to the attacker. The media frenzy over this is pathetic.

John Hartson on BT sport last night was a total clown, still banging on about the penalty even though the replays clearly showed that Raheem got to the ball first then was moved away from the line of the ball by the contact with the defender, its a clear pen and yet they are still banging on this morning.

Contrast this to the many instances where Salah gets a slight touch on the arm then throws a double summersault with triple salko and everyones happy.

Disgrace

Personally, wouldn't trust a Mahrez or Delph again this season. Wouldn't be sad to see either sold this summer (ban permitting)

With the caveat Fabian really played his part last season and has just been overtaken by Zin being so good.
We would have never won that match yesterday leaving them 2 on.

Delph is to slow & Mahrez just doesn't work.

Mahrez up top with Gabby is a disaster & a major reason Sane looks average when starting alongside these 3.

Yesterday proves Zinchenko has become critical to this starting 11.

Thanks Fabian your efforts have been rewarded espeacialy for last season but now is your time to fly the nest.

Nico, Mahrez & Gundagun if he doesn't put his signature to his new 3 year extension.

Millwall or Brighton please.

Playing Cardiff now in Early April saves shoe horning it in late April early May.

Keep it going boys

Just watching the highlights yet again (as you do!). Love how all the subs legged it over to celebrate with Aguero when he got the winner.

So; as I said, he's offside.

I did this using BBC footage. It's not inline. I think he's a foot offside.
Your line isn't straight, its nearer the back of the penalty area on the nearside of the area than on the far side, the other flaw is you can't see the ball either, and it could have been kicked before that image was taken. The best position is from the lino's view, he's dead inline (makes a change) and he gave it.

It doesn't matter anyway, history won't say Swansea City 2 - 3 Offside Manchester City.

And the linesman isn't in a position to give offside. That's not a criticism because professional players are never in a line for more than a fraction of a second and it's impossible for officials to keep up. I'd be alarmed if that picture was used officially because the goal line, six yard and eighteen yard lines are nowhere near parallel. The black line is parallel to the eighteen yard line, which is the one most likely to exaggerate any idea of offside. These are the decisions that VAR was supposed to get right, but if you decide not to use VAR...

With the penalty we have seen consistent but highly controversial VAR decisions. The studio ref has given two contradictory verdicts! VAR does not take the controversy out of penalty decisions and yesterday's has aroused more disagreement than would be thought from the instant reaction. What seems to have happened is that the tackler made contact with the ball and then made contact with Sterling. Views on the tackler range from his having "clearly" won the ball to making such minimal contact that Sterling was still "in possession". Then there is the old chestnut as to whether there was "sufficient contact" to justify a penalty. This is a question uniquely reserved for Raheem, for other players "there was contact" is sufficient justification for a penalty. Raheem usually has to be flattened by a bulldozer. Clattenberg says he may not have awarded it but thinks it unlikely that VAR would have reversed the decision. Shearer (!) thinks it was a penalty. I'll restrict myself to saying the ref gave it and the linesman seemed to be of the same opinion.

My first post ! I've followed the debate in the media ( Man City News Now - useful facility ! ) and I keep on reading ( re. Sterling's penalty ) that the Swansea player gets to the ball first ( e.g. Sunday Times -" The American stuck out a foot, caught ball rather than man, but Sterling tumbled" ). It is also the same story on the bluemoon thread. I am confused :
I keep on returning to the YouTube highlights coverage of the game to reassure myself that I am not mistaken - Sterling gets in front of the Swansea man ; he cuts across him : he stretches (with his right foot) and toe-pokes the ball forward and is then-inevitably- wiped out by the challenge from the Swansea player. The Swansea player does not get the ball ! So why all the fuss? Need I ask ?. It's a clear penalty. ( Oh, and by the way - why so little comment about the two-handed shove in Aguero's back as he scores the 3rd goal ? )
Agenda?

You make some good points. I still can't see the contact the defender makes with the ball even on slo-mos. The defender goes to ground and tackles with his "wrong" foot - exactly the disastrous mistakes Delph made which, we are told, make it most likely you will give a penalty away. Not as obvious as with Delph, but the Swansea lad did not win the ball and did take the man.

Oh to be a fly on the wall of Dippers and Rag houses after yesterday’s decisions which went in our favour for once.
Priceless.

I hate the Daily Fail, but they do feature the best sports photographs....

I would like to see the correct angle on the winning goal. BT said it was offside using an image taken from an angle that completely distorted the situation. If you remember the offside given against Sergio in the final the other week at first sight he look way off but when from the straight in line view it was extremely tight.

And a good first post :-)
I agree with you. To me it was a clear penalty, and I do not see there is reason for such discussion about it. Many decisions (and I mean many!) have been a lot less clear over the season, so why the hysterical debate about this one which is quite clearly a penalty?

the defender did get the ball, but it was marginal. From the ref's angle it would have looked a clear pen.

Aguero was offside and the pen decision was soft but so what, we've been on the end of bad decisions and will continue to be.
The record books show that we won, that's all that matters

We got lucky with two decisions, but we were so unlucky so many times in front of goal last night, it could have been 7-2 but to be fair we have to get Mendy, Stones, de Bruyne, Kompany and Fernandinho back. I thought Sterling and Zinchenko made the real difference, Mahrez doesn’t convince at all, I would have pulled him off instead of Sane. He just doesn’t seem to read the mentality of the City system, he tries to hold things up expecting Vardy to turn up, but City would have been there five seconds earlier. Delph had a shocker, but it happens like that sometimes, probably trying a bit to hard to get back into contention. I would hang on to him this summer, especially as he is home grown (English)
