Swedish Elections

Sweden received the largest influx of refugees per capita and that created an upswing in Swedish nationalism to the extent that the far right was polling at around 25% six months ago and international media was predicting an earthquake with headlines like ‘Far-Right Party Poised to Become Largest Party in Sweden’. This was then downgraded a month or so ago to ‘second largest party in Sweden just behind the Social Democrats’. Now it’s looking like third with other populist parties also making gains at the expense of the main parties.

Same thing happened in the Netherlands and in Bavaria the populist party making the running ahead of Afd are the Greens. The international media focus on the far right yet ignores the wider picture and that is European politics is fracturing and not just to the right but across the spectrum even if the right get all the publicity. There is a trend and a story here but it’s a lot more nuanced than some of the hysterical headlines.

The one major country that did get toppled by the far right was the UK. The UKIP agenda is now Tory policy and 52% of the country voted for the UKIP agenda. Yet we are pulling our skirts up in horror at the far right polling at around 17% in Sweden? Think we should be more concerned at what’s happening closer to home.

I suspect its the equivalent 17% here frothing at the mouth and wishing for 52% there - some people would welcome Far Right Rule across Europe and the demise of the EU. Odd really as one would assume come next April its not really any of their business......

But they will never win - as much as some people on here would love them too they can't - and when they get some gains they are "found out" and treated and behave accordingly - for example -

In the 2017 German federal elections the AfD won 12.6% of the vote and received 94 seats; this was the first time it had won seats in the Bundestag.[89][90] At a press conference held by AfD the day after the election, Petry said that she would participate in the Bundestag as an independent; she said she did this because extremist statements by some members made it impossible for AfD to function as a constructive opposition, and to make clear to voters that there is internal dissent in the AfD. She also said that she would be leaving the party at some future date.[91][92] Four members of the AfD in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania legislature also left the AfD to form their own group.[91]
In 1928 everyone said that the Nazi party had been “found out” as they only got 2.6% of the vote in the German elections. 2 years later they had just under 20% of the vote and 3 years after that nearly 44% of the vote.

Such a shame that for some a view which doesn't chime with theirs is "myopic, idealistic nonsense". Sad that there are such narrow minded people who if they can't depend on their ability to defend their view call on others to side with them and not enter debate - and I am myopic ha ha ha ha

It also took the Reichstag fire, the passing of Emergency powers, suspension of the free press, the arrest and suppression of communist and socialist opposition and all against the background of a worldwide economic depression.

That said I take your point. I would also add if the main center right bloc in Sweden is tempted to do a deal with the far right party in order to form a Govt then we are on a slippery slope.
