Bluemooner Cityfansimon is swimming 2 miles across Lake Windermere on June 16th to raise money for Christies.

He is slightly (ahem) out of condition.

He can take care of his dietary preparations but could do with some advice about how to train to swim such a distance in open water. He has never done this type of thing before.

I know there are threads about keeping fit etc but if any of you have any tips/programmes/ideas about how to best prepare he would appreciate it.

In particular the balance between;

gym work and swimming
muscle building and increasing lung capacity

If any female blue mooners wish to grease him down prior to his swim please form an orderly queue.

Thank you one and all for your support.

p.s. no, he didn't agree to do this when he was pissed up last night.

Any tips will be appreciated here. I know I'm gonna need to spend a lot of time in pools and lakes between now and then, but any tips on how to swim in open water conditions would be great, or any help with what exercises will help me with my training for this.

As mentioned I'm a touch out of condition and my diet I can take care of, but any help will be much appreciated.

Loads of swimming in your local pool, once a week in the lake or something similar ( trust me, swimming outdoors is completely different) should prepare your fat wobbly body for the event. Top tip? Find a stroke your body feels comfy with and stick to it. Doesn't matter if it's doggy paddle...

Cardio stuff in the gym. Running, rowing and biking.

Can we sponsor you? Maybe get a Bluemoon cap?

Forget the training.

Tie a floating shark fin to his trunks without him seeing it. When he gets a few yards into the swim shout 'SHAAAAAARRRRRK' and point to the fin. Regularly shout 'its catching you up' and he'll finish the course before you know it.

Yeah sponsorship would be great. I'll start a justgiving page up and post the detail on here.
Yeah I'll wear a bluemoon cap...
I'll keep everyone updated with how the training is going etc too.

I know it's gonna be hard work for me as I am out of shape, unfit and unhealthy at the moment so all the encouragement from here will be great.

For h+s reasons he should paint his belly orange so the boats can avoid him.

Or perhaps I can follow him in a boat and threaten to throw a ball at his head.

Footballs are way more dangerous than sharks.
