Swimming Lake Windermere

They do open water sessions down at Salford Quays, get as much of that in as possible.
Tell him to buy a GOOD wetsuit for swimming in, and use it, get comfortable in it, Your gonna need to stay warm or cramping will set in quick.
As for swimming, find a pace that is manageable for sustained periods, so you can knock out 30/40+ lengths without stopping and feeling knackered,
Goggles, buy a good comfortable pair, then buy a another pair just incase these break on you as you are bound to get an arm or a foot to the head in the frenzied start.

If you can get your breathing right, then you can piss swimming, hardest thing is to sort the breathing out between strokes.

Freezing cold water, out of condition. I hope he has a lifeboat very close by when he starts
Don't worry about gym work, swimming distances will be everything he requires to prepare
Get in the pool three times a week and build up to swimming 150 x 25m lengths as soon as possible and continue doing that
Why 150 lengths when that is far more that 2 miles?
When swimming open water, swimmers never swim in a straight line, plus the swimmer will be swimming against the weather conditions and waves
As his training proceeds, he should only take cold showers. Showering cold helps build up a thick insulating layer of fat and as soon as he reaches 150 lengths, that's the time to find somewhere to swim outside

Dry suit surely?

Just a pair of budgie smugglers and loads of goose fat should do it.

Bluemooner Cityfansimon is swimming 2 miles across Lake Windermere on June 16th to raise money for Christies.

He is slightly (ahem) out of condition.

He can take care of his dietary preparations but could do with some advice about how to train to swim such a distance in open water. He has never done this type of thing before.

I know there are threads about keeping fit etc but if any of you have any tips/programmes/ideas about how to best prepare he would appreciate it.

In particular the balance between;

gym work and swimming
muscle building and increasing lung capacity

If any female blue mooners wish to grease him down prior to his swim please form an orderly queue.

Thank you one and all for your support.

p.s. no, he didn't agree to do this when he was pissed up last night.

For h+s reasons he should paint his belly orange so the boats can avoid him.

Good advice - I'll buy a barrel of paint.

Actually, let's mnake that 2 barrels.

10 pints a day, domestic stagnation and ONLY takeaway food is all the training you need. This exercise malarky is overrated. I swam Conniston following that regime. Did it in 10 minutes then sprinted back to Manchester.

You'll nail it.

Welcome to the Forum citysquire. You have already acquired the pre-requisite detachment from reality that many of us possess.

It would be worth investibng in a waterproof MP3 player as swimming for more than 30 minutes can be a tad boring. Fill it full of your favourite tracks or even podcasts and then off you go.

For the actuaL swimming I would suggest that you get a good crawl going and look at Youtube as there are lots of good technique videos that you can learn from. When I do crawl I use one kick for every arm strike, left arm, right leg and vice versa, and it means that I don't get that tired.
Don't go for speed just a velocity that you can keep up for at least 30 minutes.

Good lucka dn keep us posted.

Yeah good idea about the waterproof MP3 player, anything to take away the boredom of swimming for a couple of hours will help.
