Swimming Lake Windermere

Any tips will be appreciated here. I know I'm gonna need to spend a lot of time in pools and lakes between now and then, but any tips on how to swim in open water conditions would be great, or any help with what exercises will help me with my training for this.

As mentioned I'm a touch out of condition and my diet I can take care of, but any help will be much appreciated.

Don't be gay do the 5k one. Oh and buy a wetsuit.

It's full or I would have done that. That's the one I tried for first.

Ah lucky you! You do need a wetsuit though; and you will need to practice with it as swimming and (more importantly) breathing is different.

Waves can get pretty big out there. Don't attempt it if the weather is not good and you have to have a boat accompanying you - otherwise you'll be a danger to yourself and other people. It's a busy waterway.

That said, it's not too far if you're a decent swimmer. Make sure you can swim a good few miles in the pool. If you can do that and swim in openwater ( it's quite a different challenge) you'll be fine.

If you live near Windermere i would suggest taking the plunge once / twice a week to get used to the waves etc, if not get down the River Mersey and swim with the shopping trollies and used johnies, you could even collect a few and maked yourself a wet suit

Go to wiggle.co.UK and buy an Orca wetsuit.

In the Spring you can join up to do open water swimming in Salford Quays, its on twice a week with lifeguards in boats.

Do that twice a week and its easy. 4 laps of the course in the quay is a mile and its so easy to do that. Doing it in a pool is a different thing. It's like training for a marathon on a treadmill.

Dead, dead easy. I'm fat and out of shape and regularly do over a mile a week in the quays

Orca wetsuit sounds good. Is it black and white and does it come with a fin?

Yeah been looking at some of the stuff at Salford quays. I want to build up a few lengths inside first though.
Looking forward to doing it if I'm honest, just the thought of it at the moment....

Maybe you should try a dip in Hollingworth lake. It'll give you an idea of what to expect . It is pretty cold but surprising only about 4/5 meters deep.
It was used by Captain Matthew webb for training before he became the first man to swim the English Channel.

It's a different type of swimming. Before my first open water swim, I tried swimming non stop in loops at the gym pool. Knackered me out. Outdoor swimming is much easier because of the wetsuit. After my first swim in Salford I did 4 laps before I decided to get out. Turned out I'd done a mile and it felt fine.

Once you're ready to go Salford Quays, give me a shout and I'll show you dome tips and stuff
