Sycamore Gap tree felled | Man in his 60s also arrested

I can't fathom why someone would do this. Who would make themselves a hated figure for no apparent gain. Is he the village idiot?
Maybe he should be made to pay for the planting of 100 young trees

What is the maximum penalty for this, anyone know ?
Did have a preservation order on it?

£2,500-5000 fine.

What are you assuming with that?

For damaging listed buildings/settings and conservation areas, which this site is, it is 2 years in prison and a unlimited fine. National/Ancient monuments, which this also is a part of, is up to 10 years in prison.

There is precedent of 9 years imprisonment for damage to a UNESCO world heritage site, which this also is. Very different circumstances.

Either way, there is more to it than just a vandalism offence.

How close is the new tree to the old one Bill?
I only ask as whilst it seems a good idea to plant a new tree, and of course I applaud that, it may impair the old trees recovery, if that's the plan.
It's a good distance from the original - still in the bowl of the gap but far enough away not to inhibit growth.

May or may not have done, but wouldn't have needed it specifically. The exact same protection applies by default to any tree within a conservation bit.

It is a 20k fine for removing a tree under protection of either a preservation order or conservation area. Just the tree alone, but then see above possibly beyond that.
