Sycamore Gap tree felled | Man in his 60s also arrested

We had already began to debate the wider issue of the huge increase in visitor numbers to areas of the UK countryside that didn't previously suffer with such issues brought about by high visitor numbers... you accused me of (wrongly) exaggerating the issue then suggested I had some irrational grudge against the people causing these issues. I refuted your claims with a coherent, fact based counterpoint... you then called me an idiot and refused to engage in the debate any further.
Are you still blaming Facebook mouth breathers and Instatwatters for cutting down the tree by the way?

Had a walk over there this morning. A new young sycamore tree was planted overnight close to the original. Its about 6 feet tall and therefore should grow to a reasonable height within a few years. According to the National Park Ranger I spoke to they have no idea who planted the tree, but it's a proper professional job - staked and fenced off.

It also appears that the suspect in his 60's is well known to have held a grudge against the Nat Park concerning a land dispute.

They should be made to carry it the length of the country, length of the country I tell thee. Till their legs have snapped and they never walk again! Infact, let's kill their immediate family whilst we're at it.

Are they Hungarians?

I can't fathom why someone would do this. Who would make themselves a hated figure for no apparent gain. Is he the village idiot?
Maybe he should be made to pay for the planting of 100 young trees

What is the maximum penalty for this, anyone know ?

How close is the new tree to the old one Bill?
I only ask as whilst it seems a good idea to plant a new tree, and of course I applaud that, it may impair the old trees recovery, if that's the plan.

fair play to the lad but I suspect the National Trust under their own rules will be compelled to dig it up -I hope not
