Syria | Assad flees to Moscow as rebels capture Damascus

Whilst HTS was spawned from AQ several years ago, they have been enemies of each other for quite some time. I don’t think it’s possible to predict which way Syria will go but the new regime certainly faces a lot of challenges. It could end up anywhere from full on Taliban-like to an almost free country. Anyone who thinks they know what will happen is deluded. I don’t think most western reporting understands the complexities of the situation there. I certainly don’t.
One potential plus is that Iran/Hezbollah could be cut out of the picture, which will benefit Lebanon. But, as you say, it could end up anywhere. Sometimes a strong man like Saddam Hussein or Assad is the less-worse option than a hotch-potch of competing, religiously-driven militias that bring conflict & instability.

And, as City fans, we already know about western reporting. They describe our owners as "despots" when, despite their imperfections, they've delivered prosperity and stability to their people in a very volatile region.

A few do, but only those with a vested interest in their football team, most of the news about UAE is pretty nuetral, but it's only fair to say that the UAE do have "issues".

I've read one report that assad may have fled to Abu Dhabi, I really hope that isn't true, as City will soon be harbouring tyrants in a few jounalists eyes.

So syria is gonna get large areas carved up between turkey, israel and iran with some tiny country left ran by, at first some puppet in damascus and civil unrest for decades until an islamis republic probably forms and the secular nation is gone

Was thinking the same plus Russia are otherwise occupied, which means they might have a better chance of sorting it out for themselves if foreign interference is minimal. However there’s too many unknowns to make a prediction.

I certainly think Israel will create a “buffer” zone

Unlikely Israel will be interested in anything other than maybe coming to an agreement on the Golan. Iran are otherwise engaged with helping Russia and Hamas as well as their ongoing direct confrontation with Israel, and Hezbollah are decimated. Erdogan could well take the opportunity to extend Turkish influence though.
