Events in Syria and Georgia and elsewhere plus the collapse of the rouble show that Putin is shall we say rapidly sinking in the shit - yes Ukraine is having issues but Putins war has now developed multiple fronts and when you rely on Nth Korea for support (see below) and you are housing Assad and his family ( can an entire family fall out of a high rise window?) doesn't look good for Putin.

An iranian (civilian) A340 airbus left Tehran about 23:30, destination "unknown", but heading straight for Damacus at the moment, of course it going there to rescue iranian diplomats, but I'm sure he could sneak out that way, he won't be welcome in many other places.

Assad has gone but like gaddafi and saddam it was contained but now it will be a free for all and I would imagine daesh will rise up again and other Islamic groups . Gonna get very messy very quickly now .

The main group (the one that has marched through and captured Homs and Damascus) is just a small step down from the level of the religious extremism of the Taliban… who also promised that they will respect others rights, women’s ability to education/life etc…

There’s also the Kurds and the Turkish backed rebels… so a bit like Afghanistans Northern Alliance.

can’t see Syria being anything but another embattled country for the future ahead - like iraq, Libya and many others when a longtime brutal dictatorship is overthrown.

I agree. When these dictators are removed, it’s lead to either society breaking down or extremist Islamic groups taking over and forcing medieval practices on the people.

Whilst HTS was spawned from AQ several years ago, they have been enemies of each other for quite some time. I don’t think it’s possible to predict which way Syria will go but the new regime certainly faces a lot of challenges. It could end up anywhere from full on Taliban-like to an almost free country. Anyone who thinks they know what will happen is deluded. I don’t think most western reporting understands the complexities of the situation there. I certainly don’t.

The way it's gone so far, it's an improvement for the women and children who will get their fathers and husbands back from the political prisons they were taken too.

It seems to have been relatively peaceful so far.
