Syria | Assad flees to Moscow as rebels capture Damascus

Thanks.

It’s certainly been happening to for a while around Ukraine and Cyprus. There were suggestions the DHl plane crash in Lithuania the other week was down to it although I think it got ruled out.

Earlier in the year I watched a Russian plane on flight radar zig zag and rollercoaster up and down across Poland.

No idea what Flight radar uses for its data mind you. Regularly there are loads of planes showing over Crimea when they clearly are not. Usually when Ukraine are attacking.
Civilian radio receivers are mostly used on FR24. Although where there's no coverage it just extrapolates the position of the plane from it's last known. Can even knock up your own https://www.flightradar24.com/build-your-own

Thanks.

It's entirely possible the Russian plane was doing exactly that.

Nah it bounced back to over Russia after a while if I recall. Trying to find screen shots. Lots of places reported it at the time.

It was around the time Russia was messing with flights over Cyprus.

It’s been going on for a while.

I'd be after a refund on my tax zloty if there was a russian plane knocking about.

Maybe planefinder has less coverage than FR24 in that area.

In retrospect my memory was off on how the plane flight looked as this one was all at 3500-4500 feet. And was April 23 so longer ago than I thought.

Suggestions at the time were they were spoofing transponder data.

Aircraft use a combination of inertial navigation systems (INS) and GPS or Glonass. It depends which system is feeding the transponder, but in general GPS Spoofing alters the time code and confuses the aircrafts navigation system into thinking it's somewhere it isn't. GPS jamming denies the signal in its entirety. Either way, anyone who does this has a reckless disregard for safety.
