Tackling Is Dead

Point has been made previously... Nani never had the ball, Vinny was intercepting the ball, not tackling it, he got there first, and Nani knew this so jumped over him, there was no malice, and any injury to Nani would of been down to him leaving his own foot in...

thats just my 2p anyway, not like it will matter to the FA, but im guessing thats the angle they would go with...

You've just made my point for me. You can't tackle in a way that leaves your opponent's safety predicated on him not going in for the challenge.

Torquay fan and a ref in peace. I also kind of support Liverpool, so I was supporting City today.

However, I have to say I thought the red card was correct. Watch Kompany's right foot. If it impacts Nani at that angle, with studs showing, with that force, it's doing him some serious damage. It was only luck that contact was minimal. Law 12 states that
A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as
serious foul play.

Given that it was by pure luck that Kompany's studs did not have heavier contact with Nani, I have to agree that when he made the tackle, he endangered the safety of his opponent.

I also think that some of the things you've said about Chris Foy are disgraceful - like telling someone to 'bomb his car'. I don't believe he made a mistake, but even if he did, it would be an honest one - no different to Silva missing an open goal in the 90th minute. If you had lost 3-2, with no red card, but Silva had missed an open goal from 2 yards out in the 90th minute, would you advise each other to bomb his car?

If I could advise Mancini, I would advise him not to bother appealing - any appeal is doomed to fail. The commission will take an even less human view of it than Chris Foy - they will look at it as a studs up tackle that could have broken an ankle, and will rightfully dismiss the appeal.

Sorry but utter nonsense the idea that the ref is able to determine the angle of a foot and how that angle will cause inflict damage on an opposing player is nonsense.

Foy reached for the red because of the total fook up he made of the Lampard foul and did not want to be seen making another monumental cock up - instead he over reacted and sent a player off for a yellow card offense and made himself lookk a twat.

Sorry but i dont believe it was an honest one - the standard of referring in this country is fookin wank and the number of decisions that Rags - Le Arse - Chelski and Liverpool have got over the years is not suspicious its disgusting. Foy is incompetent

You comments about bombing is car i do find disgusting offensive and wrong

Lampard? Chris Foy? I think you'll find the referee in the Chelsea vs Wolves game was Peter Walton, not Chris Foy.

99% of red cards for Serious Foul Play are because of the angle of the foot in the tackle. Remember Eduardo/Ramsey? Both horrific injuries caused by the angle of the foot. In November, I actually attended a talk by Peter Walton (who was the referee when Ramsey was injured). He explicitly said that he sent Shawcross off for the tackle because of the angle of his foot.

It is a referee's job to determine whether a tackle is safe or not, and the angle of the foot is a large part of that.

Bollocks! (if that is that case why didn't DeJong get a ban for the tackle on Ben Arfa it was fair but he got a bad injury) {if I was that bad at my job I would be shown the door and I could not argue with the decision}

This used to be a mans game, yes blatant fouls (yes you brian giggs) should be punished but Vinnie made a good tackle, his studs were down, the biggest diver in the game (since ronaldo left the prem) didn't even protest but one word from the white Pele and Vinnie's off?

It would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. What do one of these incompetent twats have to do to get sacked?

Can't sleep and thought I'd have a search for the sending off, sobered up a bit now as well, for the life of me I still can't see even a foul and for a ref to post on here, saying it was a red is fucking laughable.

I don't remember the De Jong tackle. But you have to remember that sometimes players get injured, and it is in no way the fault of their opponent, it's just a freak accident. If Nani had been injured by Kompany's tackle, it would have been entirely Kompany's fault. Select Group refs are given guidelines on what is acceptable, and what isn't. And Kompany's red card may have seemed soft, but the way in which he executed the tackle was a way in which he ran a serious risk of injuring Nani if there had been more contact.

You say it's laughable, but I guarantee that if it's appealed, the decision will be upheld. Even Dermot Gallagher has come out and said it was a red card.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Sick of watching it now and it's still not even a foul imo

And Graham Poll says it wasn't.

Ah, Graham Poll, Mr. Three Yellow Cards. He has a remit, which is to stir the pot, and get people angry. Dermot Gallagher is entirely independent, and I would listen to him any day over Poll. He criticised Tom Henning Ovrebo after the Chelsea-Barca Champions League debacle a few seasons ago, which just shows that he doesn't just turn up and always say the ref got it right.

People should also stop moaning about the ref 'ruining the game'. When I met Peter Walton in November, I asked him, out of curiosity, what his official job title was. I can't quite remember it exactly, but what it definitely was not was "Entertainment Manager". It's not the ref's duty to make or keep the game entertaining. Obviously trying to let it flow is one way in which we try to do this anyway. But ultimately, Select Group match officials are bound by the Laws of the Game, and if they don't apply them, they will lose their job.
