Talk about one of your favourite songs.

For me got to be Dear God by xtc. I'm not even that big a fan of them but I heard that song when I was quite young and it confirmed my confused impression of the world. Shaped my life to a degree. I was only young though.

Dear God, hope you get the letter and
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you

Dear God, don't know if you noticed but
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, so do you
Dear God

I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
The pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son, and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in its you

I welled up the first time I heard this…unfortunately it’s strikes a personal note for me as my da was a cnut…but you can hear very real emotion in the lyrics, clearly a very personal song…pure anger and sadness

Daddy’s Gone by Glasvegas (from a brilliant album btw)

How you are my hero
How your never here though
Remember times when you put me on your shoulders
How I wish it was forever you would hold us

Right now I'm too young to know
How in the future it will affect me when you go
You could have had it all
You, me, and mum you know
Anything was possible

I wont be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had
I wont be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
Forget your dad, he's gone

All I wanted was a kick-a-bout in the park
For you to race me home when it was nearly getting dark
How I could've been yours, and you be mine
It could've been me and you until the end of time

Do what you want, when you want
Be as fucking insincere as you can
What kind of way is that to treat your wife
To see your son on Saturdays
What way is that to live your life?

I wont be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had
I wont be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
Forget your dad, he's gone

I think this could be the greatest song I've ever heard. Years before Paul Simon, McLaren and Trevor Horn went to South Africa and exploited / exposed [whichever you prefer] the local musical talent. Buffalo Gals and Double Dutch were hit singles but this wasn't and is much lesser known.

The deep deep lyrics of this are like the difference between German pop music and British pop music. Or actually the difference between Germans and Britons generally.
And blow by blow the passion dies. Yep.

My memories of xtc are a bit traumatising. Dropping acid and watching the making plans for Nigel vid is imprinted on my brain to this day.
It's even impaired my ability to correctly quote a post about it. Correct ly.

I've always loved Neil Youngs "hypnotic songs" he's done a few, like conversationalist style, usually just him.
"Ambulance Blues" is the final song on Young's fifth album, On The Beach. At just under nine minutes long, it was never going to get a lot of radio play, and its conversational feel makes it an unlikely choice for jukeboxes or party playlists. Still, it's counted among Young's greatest artistic achievements. Johnny Rogan in The Complete Guide to the Music of Neil Young goes so far as to call it the "summit of Young's achievement as a singer songwriter... the most likely candidate as his greatest and most memorable composition."
Lyrically, "Ambulance Blues" is an exploration of Young's past and an attempt to find meaning in it, as witnessed in his opening line:

Back in the old folky days
The air was magic when we played

By the end of the very first verse, the song takes a plunge into the disenchantment that marks all of On The Beach. "Midnight was the time for the raid," Young sings, and from there transitions into one of the saddest, prettiest vocal turns of his career when he laments, "Oh, Isabela, proud Isabela, they tore you down and plowed you under."

Who Isabela is meant to be is unclear, as are most of the song's lyrics. At one point Young sings, "It's hard to say the meaning of this song." It's largely a stream-of-conscious rant similar to "Last Trip To Tulsa," except not nearly as abstract or weird as that song from Young's first solo album.

Neil has done a few songs of this type "Will To Love" "Ambulance Blues" "On The Beach" "The Old Homestead" are all superb imo.

Written when she was just Sixteen years of age !!!
This song has a haunting innocence, a window into the soul of a brilliantly talented young woman.
Her understanding of melody is sublime.
For me a much better example of her talents than the better known Wuthering Heights although that is not to dismiss the latter.
A beautiful yet simple song relying on that aforementioned melody and sense of innocence.

Skylarking is a classic LP, 80s psych-pop masterpiece.

Dear God wasn't on the original UK version, and was initially picked up by US College radio. Think it caused a sir in the Bible Belt?
