Teachers to strike?

The thread has been cleaned up (a bit). Please don't ruin it by slinging personal insults around.

I was joking mate. If you've read my previous you will see I respect teachers and don't envy the shit you have to put up with.
No worries mate. To be honest I don't mind the shit side of it. I work with kids who have serious behaviour problems and I love it. I go to work everyday with a smile on my face, tired but smiling all the same. I voted no because I don't want the kids to suffer. Whilst people are pratting about with banners and signs there are kids missing valuable time in class. Personally think there are better, more constructive ways of sorting it out.

By worsening the terms and conditions or employment for teachers, many of those that are currently studying to become teachers will have second thoughts and we may well lose a generation of the best suited, best motivate and best qualified to teach, which will damage the countryfor many many years to come.
But hey, as long as Etom and the old etonians dont suffer ey what

Patent nonsense, with respect. If you opt for a teaching job after these proposals have been put into effect, you will be choosing a career that will pay you a far better pension than anyone else joining a private company can hope to enjoy. So the old etonians and public schoolboys like Ed Balls and his Mrs, plus Harriet Harman, and all the rest of the labour privileged front bench who all enjoyed private education will have to find another way of fighting a class war.
Please stop the lefty point scoring shit.

I'm not a teacher but I do work in the public sector. I will certainly be on strike if my union has voted that way, mainly because I am not a scab.

This is about protecting terms and conditions and a stand has to be made because if we just capitulate then they will think they can get away with murder. I don't actually care whether the general public are behind us or not as this is more about sending a signal to the Government.

I have been happy to take a pay freeze for two years and will continue to do so if needs must, but I'll be damned if I am letting someone piss around with my contract.

If you don't care if the general public are behind you or not, whatever cause you are backing will fail.

Not necessarily AC.

And anyway, I have never really expected the general public to back us in whatever strike action we take. The fact is that a lot of people who hear the term "Civil Servant" imagine us to be someone who sits in a back office looking out of the window all day. I've worked for the service for 30 years, had two promotions and earn the national average. And every minute of every day has to be accounted for in who I interview, what I am doing if someone fails to show up and deal with ever changing policy till it makes my head spin.

I am not one who thinks that you do as you describe; I am a fervent admirer of most public servants, teachers, soldiers, doctors and firemen being the top of the list. I would love you all to receive what you are fighting for, but simple truths must be faced.
We are royally fucked and people not in your position will very soon get pissed off with any strikes, even though a lot of what you and others on here are putting forward what is a reasonable argument, with some flaws.

I know the country is royally fucked, I am not disputing that, and am prepared to do my "bit." What pees me off though is that the public sector didn't put us there and yet the powers that be are threatening to rip up our very terms and conditions. That isn't on and a message needs to be given.
My Son works in the private sector and has on occasion been treated like a piece of human garbage by employers on the make. Threatening him that they would withhold his weeks wages if he didn't work the weekend or a bank holiday for example, when his contract said Monday to Friday. Some private sector industries are crying out for Union involvement but if the people just stay mute then they reap what they sow imo.

Well, I AM in a Union and this is my voice.

The private sector did'nt put us there either and our pensions now virtually don't exist. Plenty of people are in the same boat as your son. Hard world is'nt it?

In that case the private sector need to look to the public sector and see that, at least, we try and stand up for our rights. Instead of taking it up the arse from employers that shouldn't even be in business imho. All it takes is a bit of guts and organisation. If that is unrealistic then it should never have got to this point.
