Tennis Thread

People are questioning why she was able to win a slam last year and hardly be able to win a match anywhere this.

What she hears is down to what her sponsors are willing to pay her.

If anyone wants an easy 19m, just win a tennis grand slam.

Simples.
Her record in this calendar year is w13 l16

Too much too soon for the kid.

People forget she's still one and the pressure that come with it. The lure of the celebrity etc.

She will learn over time. If she plays it right she won't have to work again when she hit her 30's. Be it in her main profession or a TV role.

Which is pretty dreadful.

That could mean she’s won 13 first round games against the world’s number 500 and gone out in the second round 13 times and the first 3.
She has made 2 quarter finals and several r16 of the top level tourneys. In Cincinnati she beat both Azarenka and Serena. Not so dusty. Her ranking was heavily skewed by the double points for US Open which she has now lost, hence the tumble.

It can’t be that many if she’s only won 13 games. Getting to a quarter final means about 3 wins, which make up nearly half of her total wins for the season.

At rank 80, she is exactly where you would expect a 19 year old newcomer to be, if she had talent. Making the top 100 is usually the aim for such players. Her Q in Madrid was on clay and at Cincinnati it was hard court, which suggests a certain all round efficiency.
What “can’t be that many”?

I’m not writing her off, I’m suggesting she’s not reached anywhere her potential this season.

Google “Raducanu current year record” and compare her to any other first year pro you like. She is the tennis equivalent of, say, a 19 year old footballer who scores a hat trick on his debut but is not a world beater immediately after. Some make it, some don’t. Patience is a virtue.

You obviously know more about the nuances of tennis than me.

I’m merely an occasional armchair fan.

99% of matches bore me, but the 1% can be some of the best sport you could ever see.

I’ve only seen a few of her matches this year and she looked nothing like she did in the US Open last year. Movement and timing were so different.

Hopefully she finds some stability and is able to focus on her game. She obviously has the talent to be up there with the best.

Oh, the BBC will be chomping at Clare Balding's bit!
