Thailand

Phuket (slightly biased here), Phang Nga and the surrounding islands have a lot to offer if you're after a beach holiday but still with plenty to do.

a mate of mine who occasionally posts on here is 3 weeks into a 5 week tour. he's travelling round thailand with his bird/ex. if you pm him now, and ask him a few questions, i'm sure he'll get back to you once he gets back (1st march).

i'll warn him that you're gonna contact him. his username is youcancallmestan.

he's travelled loads having done new zealand and europe so he's not just there for a jolly up. let me know if you want to pm him.

I did a month in Thailand last September. My first 3 weeks or so I went South and did the islands, then the last week or so before my visa ran out I did Northern Thailand.

Depends waht type of holiday your after but I'd if you've got 3 weeks go south and do the islands. I personally would spend too much time in Bangkok, 3 nights would easily be enough. One place that you can go to which is a good few hours drive from Bangkok is the tiger place. I got some quality photos form there.

Phuket was the first place I went to after Bangkok, I thought it was good at the time but then I jumped on the ferry over to Ko Ph Phi, which I thought was easily better than Phuket. Id' recommend going to Ko Phi Phi.

After Phi Phi, I went to Krabi town. Didn't like it myself, wish I'd stayed on Phi Phi longer. Then coached it across the mainland to and got the ferry to Ko Samui & then Ko Phangan. I really should have gone round the island more, I did intend to but it's easy just to go out on the piss in the touristy places and get trapped there.

Pattaya is supposed to be, shall we say an interesting place, but never ventured there myself and I guess it's not the kind of place to take the Mrs.

Chang Mai in the North is a pretty cool place but pretty out the way.

Basically I'd defo recommend Ko Phi Phi and Ko Phangan and altough it's a fair old journey I'd try go to the Tiger places I mentioned.

we went for a day trip to the phi phi islands when staying in krabbi and are planning on going to phi phi don via phuket in november

loved everything about thailand its a great place wished id have gone there years ago when i used to go on lads holidays

It was a long time ago that i went Jan 94,went to Ko Samui for about 18 days.

I was pretty stupid really travelling all that way to just sit on a beach smoking weed and eating magic mushroom omelettes.

I wish i mixed it a bit by doing some tourist stuff, the only tourist stuff i did was Patpong on the 1st day in Bangkok.

I lived in Thailand for a year or so a couple of years ago and go every year to visit family over there and as previously said if it's beautiful Islands and beaches then I would visit phi phi or Phuket in the south although I've found it to be a little more pricey than the rest of the country.
Samui is also nice and the neighbouring Koh Tao is great for going diving.

Centrally and north Kanchanaburi is interesting with the bridge and the war cemetery's are quite moving, For old temples and historical site Ayutthaya not far from bangkok is a good for a day trip while your in the capital.

If you venture towards pattaya (which is not that bad as is made out but the not a couples retreat as much as they are trying to change that), then carry on past to either Koh Samet or Koh Chang, both are relaxing Island but you do have to pay to enter as are both national parks.

Chiang Mai is also good for a few days, and don't worry about the distance there are regular flights from Bangkok for a little as £25 per person and normally available (although around the Th Aug travel will be busy as it's the queens birthday and a public holiday)

I live in the North East and it's less touristy with more ex-pats than anything else but Nong Khai is on the banks of the Mekong River and can cross over to Laos

At the moment though there is a dispute along the Cambodian border in the north-east and so best avoided as they have been sporadically shelling each over

Just come back from there after 4 weeks chilling out.

From what I have heard these are place you should probably avoid

Ko Phi Phi - Everything wrong with mass building in Thailand - v. touristy and dirty

Ko Lipe - Same as above

Phuket - Just full of Brit tourists and probably akin to going to Malaga or the Costa del Sol.

I went to the South East near the border with Malaysia and it was great. Fab chance to island hop and was able to see 4 islands in 4 weeks, we took our time.

The best place I went to was a small island called Ko Bulon Lae where we met only 1 other English couple, really nice.

We spent 3 nights in Bangkok and got to see the majority of the temples and tourist sights, missed out on Condoms and Cabbages though which is a restaurant set up by a charity supporting prostitutes in Bangkok, a very worthy cause and great food too at a reasonable price.

Make sure when you go to Bangkok that you stay near Khao San Road, but not on it.
