Without the hegemony of London in recent years and its appeal to foreign high net-worth people, this country would be utterly fucked.

glossing nicely over the dismantling of our manufacturing base so 'the other Britain' can live off the greedy bankers hand outs......splendid!!!

the place (and way of life) is not nice and i would never live there, no matter what.

should cut it off and allow each region to run itself, invest in its own infrastructure and projects.

National government can oversee and as London and the South East is the richest with the most rich people they receive very little government funding whereas poorer areas are given the bulk of public investment in order to bring themselves up to a prosperous level.

In the meantime airports in other big UK cities are upgraded allowing for pressure to be taken off London Airports and high speed trains from these airports can go to London thus allowing for more traffic between these other cities and London bringing more business to these regions allowing them to grow to a point where big business doesn't automatically gravitate to London.

That's my grand plan.

What has made the divide worse is that labour created 750k public sector jobs mainly up north so the cuts in those jobs hurt the north more

Which is true Ronnie, however in terms of redistribution is was not a bad way of doing it, if you think that people in jobs tend to spend money which then supports the rest of the local economy, for instance here on the Fylde if you decimated the public sector (the Largest employers are all Public Sector organisations) the rest of the economy would suffer, a bit like a mining town when the pit closes!

I think the answer (in my opinion) is to have much lower taxes in the North, there was a case study done about Hull a town that has had countless millions thrown at it but is still blighted by unemployment , it should be prosperous but it's not, the author said it would have been cheaper just making the whole town a low to zero tax zone businesses would flock there!

Good plan making business taxes lower, I don't think you couldnt make normal taxes lower as it would be perceived as the south paying for the north ( a bit like we feel about the scots)

A cynic might view what labour did as just job creation in labour areas. I prefer to think there was an element of trying to improve the local economies. The reality is that we need to create private sector jobs in the north and as you say, tax incentives might be a very good start

the south should pay back for the growth it's had at the expense of the north.

The north should pay back all the subsidies it's had at the expense of the souths hard work

I haven't glossed over anything. I have painted the picture as it is, not how it used to be.

The fact is that our manufacturing base was dismantled, partly due to a lack of government planning and partly due to our lack of competitiveness and industrial dexterity. I concede that is not an ideal state of affairs, but if you accept it as fact then the reality is that without the gravitational pull of one of the world's great cities, the cuts since 2008 would have been even more severe. London is, economically, our greatest asset.

The fact that you have no desire to live there does little to alter that fact.

Do you mean Wembley?
Yes but the general surrounds of it as well like Harrow and Greenford maybe Cricklewood

I thought Harrow was posh as fuck?

Some parts of Harrow borough are 'posh' and, of course, one of the most famous fee-paying schools shares its name. However, the town is a godforsaken shithole.
