That There London

I haven't glossed over anything. I have painted the picture as it is, not how it used to be.

The fact is that our manufacturing base was dismantled, partly due to a lack of government planning and partly due to our lack of competitiveness and industrial dexterity. I concede that is not an ideal state of affairs, but if you accept it as fact then the reality is that without the gravitational pull of one of the world's great cities, the cuts since 2008 would have been even more severe. London is, economically, our greatest asset.

The fact that you have no desire to live there does little to alter that fact.

deary, you need to take off those banker coloured glasses and check the reality. london has absorbed a lot of the economic strength of the provinces and now looks back at the rest of us with a pitying disdain for our plight and graciously hands out free money to help the poor people of the north.
london grew as the rest of this historic country was purposely decayed and we are supposed to applaud this?
Banker coloured? Can't seem to find it on here:

Can you name me a time when London didn't dominate this country, as your post appears to be suggesting?

its the capital city, it will be the main trading centre for the country, that i am not disputing, but the way other provinces have been virtually abandoned with all the emphasis on london is a travesty to all the endeavour and sheer inventive brilliance the outlying areas have produced, these other regions and cities made london what it is, not the other way around - that is until the last 20 years.

not self pitying as another poster has said (although in jest) just a real deep down shame this country that was once standing on the shoulders of giants is now standing on the shoulders of wankers!

Reduce corporation tax for companies headquartered outside of the London and SE.

The previous government set-up numerous schemes to improve employment levels in areas across the country - Future Jobs Fund and Working Neighbourhoods Fund, among others. Manchester, and the surrounding areas, received £Ms. I suggest you ask the relevant authorities about what happened to that money.

In addition I would increase NI for employees and employers in London as it costs far more to provide public services down there.

Per head?

Some parts of Harrow borough are 'posh' and, of course, one of the most famous fee-paying schools shares its name. However, the town is a godforsaken shithole.
Acton's worse. And Park Royal. Possibly the most depressing brewery tour in Britain in its day (Guinness) iirc.

Fair enough but I raise you Elephant and Castle, Peckham, Walthamstow and Bow

Bow is okay these days along with most places near the Olympic rejuvenation.
So is Elephant and castle, been done right up
Peckham is still very shit
Woolwich
Camberwell
Deptford
Edmonton

Who has abandoned the provinces?

I still think Bow and E&C are horrible. I have to visit Southwark for work occasionally and find myself in E&C. It is not somewhere I like to be. There has been some regen work but the locals haven't changed.

I will defend Edmonton as I have done some work in the past with communities in that area and it has improved. I also know that the planned regeneration work in the area (Meridian Water, close to Fore Street/A406 area) will improve it substantially.

Good shout re Deptford, although I am unable to comment on Camberwell as I haven't been.

Elephant and Castlet is a fucking eye sore. When I was there last time (had to jump on the tube from the bus) a tramp threw a can of beer at me and missed by a country mile.
