Thatcher dead

Those that are truly great aren't despised by millions.....

I think that's a fair comment.

Thatcher was the right leader to break the wildcat strikes allowing us to bring the country and economy back under control. What was really the alternative to something that had already destroyed 3 governments? She loved a confrontation and what this country needed was never going to be pretty, she [seemingly] lacked the social compassion but then again so did those she sort to fight. What we're left with is a deeply divided economy which has been left unaddressed for too long and we need real viable and long term solutions - not labours job creation scheme that had no substance however well intentioned - we can't compete on labour costs so lets make Britain attractive to consumers and firms alike, for example, by giving car manufacturers no corporation tax if they manufacture here, a car built and sold in Britain is free of VAT that type of thing (although it probably breaches European rules on competition)

the poll tax was to replace the rates system where your house value dictated what you paid. so big savings for the rich.

not just the rich, my Auntie was an old lady living alone in a detached house who hardly ever went out, why should she pay 3 times the rates of a family with 3 kids living in a terraced house ?
they probably use 3 or 4 times the services (4 times more refuge etc) that she used so why should she be penalised ?

I wasnt for the poll tax but the old rates system in a lot of cases is unfair, it should be a user pays system.

to revisit the poll tax/rates debate. the only fair tax is an income tax

She made a lot of mistakes but she also did good things too. I didn't see too many Council House Tenants moaning when they were buying their houses at knock down prices. My Aunty made a fortune on hers as she bought it for next to nowt due to living in it for years. My Parents who had always owned their own house didn't get a reduction on their next house for always paying the mortgage.

the tennants she sold to didnt moan, but those currently waiting for a council house (there are very few because Thatcher didnt allow the councils to replace the houses they sold) man a lot (and rightly so).

selling the coucil houses would have been a reasonable policy if the income had been usedto build replacement council houses. they werent. so its was bollox.

Those services are provided at one address, saves money as they do not have to go to 3 address's to collect refuge and provide the other services.

VAT is fairer (so long as it doesn't apply to essentials)

It was a good idea in principle. However, I agree it was flawed but it's now 22 years since Thatcher stepped down and well over 30 years since the scheme was introduced so to keep blaming her this far down the line is a bit silly. We've had 4 Prime Ministers since 1990 and they've all had ample opportunity to address the situation but failed. More than sufficient time has elapsed since Thatcher left her post as PM for subsequent leaders to have done something about the shortage of council houses.

She was "Milk snatcher".....................Harold Wilson's government who stopped free school milk for 11 to 17 year olds in 1968 was of course labour.

She was "without compassion"..............The unions she faced were full of compassion as they prevented you trying to bury your dead and cut power to hospitals and the vulnerable.

She is to blame for the shortage of social housing...................Well besides the point made that its been 30 years since her leadership, it is not the labour party currently opposing the measures to free up social housing for those with the need rather than those who`s need has passed but remain in subsidized housing ?, the same labour party who in 13 years did what for those on the housing lists....... ignored them while moving financial migrants to the top of the lists.

She was a grocers daughter who went to a grammar school, and the left hated her for it because she put paid to the "All Tories are from the privileged class" lie.

While labour spouted about equal rites for women the Tories elected one as leader, something the labour party has still not done.

Usually they say judge a person by their friends, in Maggies case it may be worth judging her by enemies, a bigger collection of utter c*nts would be harder to find.

still dont see why one person in a house should pay 3 times the rates/tax as 4 people in a smaller house
