The Aintree meeting thread

Back to the racing.

I had 2nd and 3rd (got 20s for Seabass yesterday, before it went mad). Won a few quid, but Sunnyhillboy coming 2nd meant I missed out on another around £45.

As a racing fan, I don't like the Grand National at all. Its too much of a free-for-all. Great for the ordinary punter, and I can definitely see the attraction to get involved.

If I was in charge I'd reduce the size of the field and if possible reduce the size of some of the fences further.

Trawling around the various reports of today's racing, there are some strange utterances from the Guardian's Barney Ronay:
...It was another bravura, slightly frantic grand day out for the gorgeously edible Balding, hatless at Aintree all the better to display those mouth-watering golden swirling toasted highlights, and looking as ever like a teddy bear dipped in honey.

Well; I suppose, with a brown paper bag over her head and a bit of imagination......

And yes; I know she bats for the opposition!

I had a 6th and a 9th place today, slightly dissappointed as I had PP's top 5 finish option, thought I'd be quids in.

Don't usually bet as I know sod all about horse racing, not keen on the fences as they seem a bit high and awkward, but I understand its part and parcel and can only get safer.

Just a shame the Gold Cup fell, he didn't look right before the start but I'm not the expert so...shame.

I don't think its a coincidence that once the field has been spread out and only a few remain there are very few falls in the later stages of the race.
They had reduced the height of fences this year but it seems that hasn't helped so maybe reduce the number of runners.

Only just watched the race and seeing According to Pete run off with his leg facing the other way was heartbreaking. Both horses fell at Beachers Brook so no doubt that fence will be in the thoughts of the organisers.

It was a great race though and to finish like that after 4 and a half miles is incredible. Think Ballabriggs would have won with less weight but I still got a good ride for my money

Who we backing?

I'm on West End Rocker. I really fancy him in these conditions. No, im not backing Junior. I'd be surprised if they ran him to be honest, will hate the ground.

Fantastic race, utter carnage at times which is awful to watch, but amazing animals these.
