The Album Review Club - Christmas Break Until 8th January

I mentioned it last week but I think I have a problem with rock stars. Its a very listenable album
Yes, I know where you are coming from there too. I do like the odd one, Michael Hutchence / INXS being the prime candidate, but generally I favour John Mellecamp's approach, as he sings in "Pop Singer":-

Never wanted to be no pop singer
Never wanted to write no pop songs
Never had no weird hair to get my songs over
Never wanted to hang out after the show

Queen - Sheer Heart Attack

Queen have always just been to flamboyant and in your face for my liking - Not to say i haven't many a time sung along to their big hit singles , of which there is plenty.
Always felt Queen in some ways are so iconic they are bigger than Music, Freddie Mercury is possibly the greatest front man of all time - watching him at Live Aid and many performances - not many can hold an audience and have that aura quite like him.
Anyhow, aside from the Greatest Hits this is my first venture into a full Queen Album and i was ... pleasantly surprised, it wasn't to 80's and flamboyant as i thought it would be, in fact 'Brighton Rock' is a great 'rock' track and opener, 'Now I'm Here' was probably my favourite - another good slightly glam rock track, 'Lap Of The Gods' had a 'Great Gig In The Sky' floydy feel and liked the revisited version at the end. 'Killer Queen' is obviously the stand out, great Pop track and lyrics.

7/10

It made me feel more than it deserved
Thats because it is a very fine album of rock/country music which is what I thought we were reviewing. You seem to be reviewing Rod Stewarts life style albeit I have no idea if you have real knowledge of his medical history.

Maybe we should review all our picks so far for their authors questionable behaviours. Also maybe we ban any songs that don't have the composers 'lived experience' in them. Perhaps too we should check everything for historical and geographic authenticity.

Its a first for me mate, reading a review dripping with poison where the author actually likes the album. Well done.

Havent dipped into your pick as of yet but I think MrBelfry has perhaps paid it the biggest compliment you can get with any selection ...that it moved him. made him feel something, made him look deeper.
better that than Meh!

But thats my TWO pence worth so far...

I think I was put off ever listening to Rod by virtue of his disco phase and yet when I have seen him early on in his career I have thought that I should perhaps give him more time. It is certainly something that partaking of this thread has done for me. Given me a reason to broaden my narrow horizons.

And then spookily on my FB feed I see Jerry Harrison/Adrian Belew are touring "Remain in Light".

I don't know much about Rod Stewart to be honest I thought he was Scottish until about an hour ago. I just applied a hyperbolic dose of absurdist logic to the lyrics to reinforce that its an album that i consider is style over substance.

I've not argued any songs should be banned or fact checked but i deserve the right to comment on them in an album review thread. My complaint about buffalo and steel guitar was also obviously ridiculously over the top which should clue you to the fact that whilst I have an opinion my opinion has very little merit. I take the task of reviewing seriously but my reviews should not be taken seriously. Who am I? I'm a nobody who's achieved nothing being snarky on the Internet to amuse myself a little.

My opinion on something shouldn't impinge on your enjoyment of it.

I tried to describe some of the reasons why it didn't connect with me which are ultimately because I don't think it's trying very hard to do so. I think I mostly used as evidence what is in the material. Please feel free to argue where and why I'm wrong. Happy to discuss further or you can just carry on thinking I'm a bellend (most people do).

I’m genuinely not sure where to start mate. I’m not really that familiar with your style of review because I have been in and out of this thread over the past few months so. Although I considered some of what you said absurd as a critique of the music that might be your style so fair do’s. Of course you have a right to say whatever you choose but then I have every right to respond to it.

I guess I should take it as a joke that you rewrite Stewart’s name as Syphilis but for whatever reason I didn’t see the humour. particularly as you claim to know little about the guy. Anyway maybe that’s on me.

The syphilis thing was just a dumb joke which I've now edited as it was unfair and dumb. Not getting my reviews places you firmly in the majority and although i do attempt to justify what I say my success rate varies. By his own admission he stinks so I feel justified in keeping that in

To be fair, mrbelfy’s review is fairly consistent with the others he’s done. I find reading them quite entertaining. He spent ages dissing War of The Worlds and then gave it a high score. Actually he wrote two opposite reviews of that album which was entertaining in itself.

I was about to suggest that maybe he overstepped the mark with re-christening Rod, but he’s had the decency to edit that, so all’s good as far as I’m concerned.

I think there’s always room for a bit of mischievousness in a review, and mrbelfry has the art down to a tee.

I'm obviously sometimes proactive but I'd hope I keep on the right line of offensive. Always feel free to call me out and hopefully I will respond with humility

No, you’re all good, mate. At most it was a little bit disrespectful to the nomintor, but we’re all friends here and I don’t think it’s a big deal. As noted, you took action before it was a problem and that’s to your credit. Don’t worry about it.
