The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

They were around from 68 , but they didn’t become the UFO we know until their third album with Schenker, Phenomenon in 74. Agree great band though.

My first UFO gig was two years after I first saw KISS. I love UFO but their successful period came after KISS had become superstars and UFO never reached the level of success or sustained anything like that of KISS.

Again, they are different kinds of hard rock band.

I’m not being dismissive. At least I hope not. Many of my contemporaries and mates were into them at the time. They just didn’t do anything for me, musically. I’m not saying they are copyists. The bands I mentioned, I regard as superior in that vein, musically. Maybe not theatrically.
I saw UFO in the seventies in Dublin and thought they were shite. I was really disappointed, having enjoyed their albums. I just never progressed with this stuff into the 80’s and particularly the American stuff. Never got into VH either but recognise how some would. They wrote MTV friendly rock.

If it's not your thing, it's not. Everyone's taste is unique to them.

Van Halen, or to give them their correct title, Van Fuckin' Halen!! Arguably their best output was before the MTV era, but they did suit it with many of their daft OTT videos.

To have been there seeing them emerge was a really exciting time and place to be. Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing was taking it to another level. The likes not seen since Hendrix did the same. He created a whole new style, copied by many but rarely equalled ... 'Diamond Dave' and his completely over the top persona, the sheer power and fun they brought blew away many of the old guard (literally, in the case of them supporting a tired and past it Black Sabbath at the Apollo in 78)

They spawned a million copyists and many were awful, but they made such an impact at the time.

Nothing strange about that. Particularly when there was so much more interesting music to listen to.
that whole genre inhabited by the bands you mention just left me cold.
