The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

Not as rich as Billy Joel!

Joel, slightly richer then Paul Stanley but half as rich as Gene Simmons, who ranks 6 or 7 in the list of wealthiest rock stars. Not a mark of artistic merit but quite a feat for such a talentless bunch.

On the artistic points front, not sure how many spotted that Destroyer is #745 on the Larkin (BlueHammer) list; Dressed to Kill actually made it to #445.

And the venerable Rolling Stone has Alive at # 6 on it list of greatest live albums; one of only two rock acts in the top six.

While only a few on here appreciate their worth, we are not as lonely in the big wide world as (say) a Smiths fan where KISS have managed to amass more gold discs than any other American band; plenty of multi-platinum ones too. As ever, it's good that we aren't all the same.

Some claim that Kiss wouldn't have been nearly as popular without their makeup and showmanship. I think that's probably true.

At the same time, their costumes and stage act repulsed prospective fans.

I've always loved Kiss yet nearly everyone I know, even those that like hard rock music, hate Kiss.

This song though - among some few others of theirs (Beth, Rock n' Roll All Nite, New York Grove) - seems well-liked even among those who dislike Kiss.

My favourite Kiss album is Creatures of the night. I find the hard rock fans that don't like Kiss are those that take themselves and the music too seriously. Just like I enjoy a wide range of food from a kebab to a michelin starred restaurant,or a rom com to the godfather in film, I can enjoy Kiss as much as a prog band both good just different experiences.
