The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

Only had a chance for a couple of listens this week...and the first listen was met with a small smile on my face. I quite liked it. The second listen was met with a similar grin. I'm quite liking this, Bogan Pride, New Boys and Dumb Ideas are all excellent tunes. I like his voice, I don't mind the swearing and I've just ordered the album. CD only as the vinyl is bloody expensive!

It's not a 10/10 album...no album is, there's always room for improvement, but I am bloody enjoying it.

It gets 7. First half is a belter, second not so...but still good.

As soon as I heard this and it has been critically acclaimed I immediately thought of The Saints and The Replacements two of my favourite bands of all time.

I am not the least bit surprised they claim these two bands as amongst their major influences.

A perfect synergy of punk and alternative rock but as you say without blatant even subtle plagiarism.

I am a huge............. fan of the Replacements and always will be ( few songwriters better than Peter Westerberg IMO ) and while I could never rate this as highly as the likes of Let it Be ( not as thought provoking IMO which is what attracts me to artists and why I never grow tired of playing these daring albums ) I am not surprised you rate it highly Fog.

Opitz would not have taken them on unless they had melody , an in your face appeal and had no qualms about the subject matter , e.g. serial killers , bikie gangs and the like something that many don't gravitate to but they do it brilliantly.

I agree that they probably would have no qualms if they continued to play venues in SA on mass but they are more than talented enough and attract lovers of this raw sound to play in venues in San Fran and the UK and in Europe that latter of which they have.

Hope you get the chance to seem live sometime.
I actually had no idea they were critically acclaimed, but I can hear why they might be. Looking forward to digging into the rest of their catalog (already heard Mob Rules, which is also great).

My 10/10 is a bit of a meta score. But I liked it more than a 9 — in fact I loved it — so I bumped them up above my other 9s. They deserve it. I do gravitate to the same tunes you do, but found the others well-crafted if not delightful.

I can see the appeal to many of the usual suspects in here. That not a criticism by the way.
I thing the album gets off to a Brilliant start with the first two songs. Am I the only one that hears The Monkees in the opening riff of Cuff and Collars? (Last train to Clarkesville)
It just shows the differences in taste though.
I thought Bogan Pride, which seems to be many’s favourite, is almost good but blurs into a fuzzy mess. A couple of others almost get there for me too, without quite reaching the heights but by and large I find a great deal to like about this album.

I like the guys voice. Perfectly suits this kind of music. I think it may just be the edgy, gritty, bite in it with just the right amount of Ozzy accent that hits the spot.

I like the drums and bass driving it.
The guitar can be a bit tinny but the musicianship and melody is there. I like it on some songs more than others.
The content is alternative enough for the tunes not to become too poppy. It’s definitely more on the punk end of the scale.

I like it. 7 is a safe score as I haven’t had enough time to elevate it to an 8, if repeat listens would have had it grow on me more, or demote to a 6 if it became tiresome.

Very good first choice mate.

A very good choice indeed @southamptonblue. It scored a rare 10 and got a good few 7s and 8s. Dog at Bay pulled in 14 votes for an average of 6.29, which puts it in a nice comfortable mid-table position.

I think the thing about this one, regardless of whether you liked it or not, was that it was an obscure choice that pretty much none of us had ever heard of. The fact that some liked it enough to buy it speaks volumes as to the value of this thread.

That's the end of week #31 and indeed the end of round #2. Normally at this point, I'd invite the next nomimator ready for tomorrow, but there's a slight tweak coming up .......
