The Album Review Club - Week #145 - (page 1923) - Tellin' Stories - The Charlatans

So Bruce, as the poet once said, 'says nothing to me about my life' in the sense that for me there's no instant emotional connection to his defiant fist pumping championing of the ordinary American man (or woman). I suspect at heart I'm just too much of a navel gazing miserabilist. So I'm in the appreciate rather than love camp.

That said, I preferred this to the two albums either side of this and I have re-listened to BTR to confirm this, it's an album I get why people love it but it just leaves me cold. I think on this one I quite like the fact it's a bit all over the shop and also when he decides to scratch his r&b itch now and again.

Album opens very positively with a 3 strong songs of different types. Multiple people have pointed out it then goes a bit tits up and whilst I'm not a great fan of the fourth song I'm not sure I feel quite as strongly as others. It perks up with Rosalita but I'm still not 100% sure of what to make of the final track other than it struggles to hold my attention over the full 10 minutes.

Enjoyable enough and if 3 or 4 of the tracks come up on autoplay I would happily listen to them but there's not enough there for me to become a convert which is ok because technology has destroyed my attention span to the point where going to a 3 or 4 hour concert is probably beyond me! 6/10.

A genre we haven't had before, emo. On the more melodic and tame side of it.

Sounds like a few of us, myself included, aren't 100% sure of what really constitutes emo so I think it'll be interesting. I've heard bands who I thought had little in common with each other bracketed together as emo.

This would probably be one of those.

As a type, not a specific band.

Well, it's not converted me but I did enjoy some of it. The trouble is the album doesn't really know what it is. Mish mash of odd styles. Rosalita isn't bad, the first couple are ok...but the rest? A bit unsure.

It gets a 5.

Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous

Great pick , always meant to give TL a real go one day having always liked and been interested in ‘Boys Back In Town’ and ‘Jailbreak’ and knowing very little else of them , despite visiting their recording studio in Dublin.

It’s loud, it has so much energy and some great change of directions sound wise.
‘Emerald’ especially has some amazing guitar work and that outro is as good as it gets.
Loved ‘Rosalie’ and the ballady ‘Still In Love With You’ and the two obvious big hits.

Despite how much extra studio work went into this it’s obvious enough just how good these guys are live.

There’s still a few too many tracks that just don’t stick with me for some reason with TL. But hard to fault this one.

8/10
