The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

I think 80s rock became over produced, certainly. By the time the late 80s were around the production definitely removed a lot of the "edge" I like in rock.

This album isn't over produced as such, but it sounds to me like there's too much production in it. It lacks that "soul" that I hear in rock albums from the 70s. I can't put my finger on it, it's hard to explain!

It's not my cup of tea but the guitar just washes over me and the guitar is a big part of the VH sound. Fast solos, lots of "noise" doesn't do it for me. I am a hypocrite though as I like Pantera for exactly that reason haha! :)

Not entirely sure what "soul" you think is missing compared to 70's rock albums, and at least part of this album was recorded in the 70's; it's not really an 80's album in any sens other than it's release date.

Of course there's nothing deep and meaningful here, although there's a little bit of personal stuff in some of Roth's lyrics but VH were a party band.

I’m surprised at the small No of 60s releases covered. Maybe so many classics that folk tend to avoid them.
There’s so many classics and quite possibly they’d be too well known for the likes of this thread.
I know a few of us are sticking to a theme to try and bring a new perspective to the music threads.

Foggy, definitely. Myself, sticking with Irish and hopefully less known (Rory aside). Bill too.
There’s a load of other albums have come to my mind that aren’t Irish and are classics that I may eventually get to. Stuff that has a special place in my heart.

I think that’s the important criteria. It has to mean something to the reviewer. When I choose one my thought process is 1) does it mean a lot to me 2) will it be ‘new’ to at least some 3) does it have at least some artistic merit that makes it stand out. 4) is it different enough from past picks.

At the moment I have a candidate list of three or four for next time.

Most of my "formative" stuff, the music that really means something to me, was released between 1986-1993. That's why a lot of my picks will be from this small time period. Selected albums released in this short window will always mean way more to me than music from any other era, regardless of how good the critics tell me the giants of rock and pop are :)

I think if we were doing a “Great Books” thread, people wouldn’t be bringing Milton and Pope to the table either. :) Of course younger people might say the same about the 70s, 80s or even 90s music I love!

Anyhow, I can’t think of too many 60s records I listen to anymore, nor any that mean something to me. Those that do definitely ARE the “classics” we all know. And those I do listen to now tend more to be greatest hits compilations.

I’m more than happy to chuck in the well known classic albums for my picks

You need a mix and a balance on here

It’s all good having unknown bands and albums, but after a while posters dwindle

Plus no one wants to hear my 90’s indie stuff anyway :)
