The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

I think that’s the important criteria. It has to mean something to the reviewer. When I choose one my thought process is 1) does it mean a lot to me 2) will it be ‘new’ to at least some 3) does it have at least some artistic merit that makes it stand out. 4) is it different enough from past picks.

I think that's it isn't it.

If asked, I could find something to nominate from more or less any given decade. And of most genres. And possibly from preferred countries too. But the priority would be things without preconception as 1 and 3 above. If they happen to be within 10 years of each other or along the same A-road, hopefully doesn't matter.

There’s so many classics and quite possibly they’d be too well known for the likes of this thread.
I know a few of us are sticking to a theme to try and bring a new perspective to the music threads.

Foggy, definitely. Myself, sticking with Irish and hopefully less known (Rory aside). Bill too.
There’s a load of other albums have come to my mind that aren’t Irish and are classics that I may eventually get to. Stuff that has a special place in my heart.
I’m trying to steer away from the classics, indeed I don‘t think anyone on here had heard of ‘Sunhouse’,and I look forward to listening to stuff I’ve not heard of before or in a long time.My next choice could well be from the Emerald isle, unless its your next nomination.

Most of my "formative" stuff, the music that really means something to me, was released between 1986-1993. That's why a lot of my picks will be from this small time period. Selected albums released in this short window will always mean way more to me than music from any other era, regardless of how good the critics tell me the giants of rock and pop are :)
Same for me though it’s a wider band — early 70s to mid 90s — but particularly at change points (late 70s/early 80s punk revolution and early 90s grunge revolution). Both those transitions allowed for a lot of creativity and experimentation by a lot of bands which created unique records IMO.

We had a classic from the 80's last week and it stormed to the top but more importantly it revived interest in this thread.
Seems like to me that this week's pick has benefited from the Smiths as well with more reviews than normal.
My next pick is going to be a female artist as I have not put one forward yet in my picks.

I think if we were doing a “Great Books” thread, people wouldn’t be bringing Milton and Pope to the table either. :) Of course younger people might say the same about the 70s, 80s or even 90s music I love!

Anyhow, I can’t think of too many 60s records I listen to anymore, nor any that mean something to me. Those that do definitely ARE the “classics” we all know. And those I do listen to now tend more to be greatest hits compilations.
Maybe but they almost certainly would be bringing Dickens. I listen to 60s albums still and enjoy them. Many of them are dear to me from when I first heard them in the 70s. The best albums that the Doors, Cream, The Stones, The Beatles, Dylan, The Beach Boys, Van the man, Hendrix, Zappa, the Who…ever made. I wouldn’t dream of sampling them from Best of compilations.
I just wonder if they are underrepresented on here because they are classics or because of the average age of the reviewer?

As an English major I would absolutely be bringing Dickens! I think age has a lot to do with it.

I wouldn’t mind if folks tossed out some 60s classics — indeed we’ve had quite a few on the @BlueHammer85 thread. But I have my preferences — just because a record is considered a “classic” by others doesn’t mean I’ll think of it that way (I’ve never understood the love for Astral Weeks, e.g., but I completely understand it for Pet Sounds).

The Smiths was always going to bring the punters in.
OB1's picks always bring more voters in (I think there must be a good number of rockers on here).

I don't think "it revived interest in this thread". I think we have a good number of people who post most weeks, but you will always get regulars + specialists when something well-known is nominated.

Hard rock/metal just isn't my thing, with a few exceptions and sadly Women and Children First isn't one of those exceptions. It's just not a genre that I have ever really been able to get into. It doesn't appeal to me on a musical level and has it has no nostalgic value for me.

I have listened three times but still failed to really get anything from it. I'm sure it's a good example of its genre but it just isn't for me, which makes it quite difficult to score. No songs that stood out but nothing really grated either.

It's certainly not horrible but not something that I am ever likely to listen to again. As such a middle score of 5/10 would seem fair.

Did it though, revive interst in this thread?

One week of a few extra Smiths fans and someone pissing on the thread does not a revival make. As much as I enjoyed and welcomed their contributions. If you think it needs reviving that is.

This week's nomination is arguably a classic one as well. We will have weeks where we feel that about certain albums, and ones that will happen naturally.

Personally, don't think anyone should go nominating stuff just because they are classic albums, nor avoiding putting them forward for that reason. Anyone can nominate anything for any reason in fairness, the main reasons in earlier posts above seem the most logical to me.
