The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

It was with some reticence that I got this ready to play, knowing that really this is a genre of music that isn't for me. First time out I wasn't really in the mood and my prejudice held sway. Not a fair way to approach it though and with some interior decorating to do it was a reasonable accompaniment to the swish of a roller and the dab of a brush. Third listen was to get me in the mood, during a trip over the Cat and Fiddle for a round of golf.

So, after three listens... well this will never be my thing and I have no benchmark for whether it is a good example of the genre or not. But...

What I sort of liked about it was that these guys seemed to be enjoying themselves and not taking it all too seriously. Anyone that has the chutzpah these days (or those days) to rhyme rules with fools (and the odd school) and not make it sound too hackneyed is doing something right. Disappointed really not to hear them talking about a walk in the park in the dark but well, you can't have everything.

Best songs for me were the ones where I think they were playing straight up heavy metal, or whatever this is. The Cradle Will Rock, Fools, songs of that ilk. Less successful Out of Control which I thought was messy, not sure what they were trying to achieve.

This isn't going to convert me and I'm never going to play it again but in certain moods if this sort of stuff comes on the radio I wouldn't be switching for the off dial.

Just before I score, I don't get the raving about Jump. Not on this album I know but I just don't like that song, including the Aztec camera cover. I'd just ask myself why did they do that?

Anyway, a score for this. I was veering to a 6 but it didn't hold me enough and it's inconsistent. Not terrible though. I'll give it 5

I know we all hear and feel things differently - and feel may be the key word here - but whenever I hear the riff from "Jump", it gives me a good feeling inside. It's so joyous and effervescent that I don't care what DLR is singing about, it would work just as well as an instrumental.

I've mentioned on here a few times that I was relatively late in listening to, buying music, and going to gigs (17 years old in 1986), but I remember hearing "Jump" a few times when it was released and even then I remember thinking that there was something special about it (same with Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger").

the year of Woodstock , I am envious Rob , you can always tell your grandchildren and hopefully great grandchildren you came alive when modern music festivals came alive.

Everybody wants some !!!

Got that stuck in my head

Suprised how many on here are not into big American Rock, and I’m one of them

Although, I’ve always found it enjoyable- just can’t take it seriously enough to love.

First time I’ve heard Van Halen aside from ‘jump’ - some good songs here ‘Cradle Will Rock’, ‘Fools’, ‘Take Your Whisky Home’ and the acoustic ‘Could This Be Magic’ (wish more were like this)

Some other tracks are ok but forgettable

I’ll go 6/10 pleased to give Van Halen a first ever listen, so a good pick

Another week done. @OB1 once again pulled in a big crowd for Van Halen's Women and Children First - 18 nominators.
Alas the average was down at 5.88, which is at least the highest average below 6.

Time now for @denislawsbackheel to drop a few hints to his selection.
