The Art of Taking Penalties

Harry Kane always takes a great penalty. Very hard and low in the corner he gives most goalies no chance. The only one I remember him missing was at Anfield but made up for it a few minutes later

Kane usually goes high into the left corner. At least the last few have been. He also hits them very hard. They were measured at 70mph+ at the WC. No saving them, as long as they are on target.

I'm surprised more takers don't just blast it down the middle, with a bit of height to avoid the trailing legs, as just about every keeper dives one way or the other as they have to be seen to making some kind of effort. If they just stand there, they just look like a tit. Balo was fantastic at that. Not only scoring them, but humiliating the keeper at the same time. I remember one against Friedel against Villa. He waited until Friedel had shifted his weight on to his right leg to dive that way, and rolled it the other side of him, but only by a couple of feet. Nothing Friedel could do - he sort of collapsed like a sack of spuds - but look like a twat.

Yaya's aim - usually just inside the left post - was uncanny.

So do i.i side foot low and hard, left footed, every time, either corner will do,often shaping to go one way, before switching at last second.

The exception was a sunday morning cup match about 20 yrs ago.all level after extra time.went to penalties.i stepped up placed the ball confidently
I knew what i was gonna do,feigned to sidefoot to keepers left bottom corner..changed direction at very last second...sent keeper completely wrong way..
And he watched, with everyone else, as ths ball went just over the right corner ,kept on rising, higher and higher and landed about a mile away.
We were out the cup ! The pub afterwards was uncomfortable, as were the next few weeks ,until everyone forgot it.

Every week if Mahrez is taking them.
Ok, the lad missed a penalty but I can understand Pep's decision to select him because had he scored, the headline would have been "Mahrez gets winner at Anfield". It would have given the new signing an immense psychological boost and could have kick-started a great season.
Let's hope he gets over the miss asap.

I doubt that was the reason, more like Mahrez is technically gifted and apparently scores them for fun in training. I thought it was strange Pep didn't know how bad of a penalty record he had though.

Alison had that fucker covered all day, even if it had been on target

If Mahrez looked up as he addressed the ball, he’d see that Allison had committed to go right. He didn’t, he’d already decided he was smashing it.

Anyone can take a penalty until the moment when it really counts, such as a penalty shootout or the last minute of a vital game. Then it all comes down to solitary focus.
Funny, because in that situation, some of the most selfish twats in professional football are often the best penalty takers.(Ronaldo being a prime example).
I would have backed Yaya or Balotelli to score on Sunday but of the current squad, only Aguero and Gundogan fill me with confidence. The rest are too nicey-smiley, and most would have panicked
