The Athletic article on Alfie Haaland and Keane

Either way, it is the most despicable act any professional player can inflict on another one.

Haaland didn’t know what had happened, only that Keane had gone down without any foul/challenge. Keane held that spite and bile for ages before committing an assault (it wasn’t a tackle, it was a premeditated assault) on Haaland in the derby...and compounded it by bending down to spit venom after his red card.

While I like to listen to Keane’s analysis of games, players, incidents, that challenge should have been the one that ruined HIS career. Instead, it’s just another in the long lists of red cards and seen as another indication of him being a hard man. It doesn’t take a hard man to go in at knee height with your studs up. That’s COWARDICE!

And, like one of the posters above said, no-one stood up to him and he walked off 100 yards across the field to a standing ovation from 60,000 scum.

That challenge should have resulted in an all out brawl, but the games gone soft, and his reputation protected him from any City players stepping up to address the issue.
Oh for a Mike Doyle that day....

As bad as that tackle on Haaland was, I remember a worse one from Keane on Neil Pointon when Pointon was at Oldham. Absolute miracle how his tibia wasn’t snapped. Awful tackle

Shame none of our players on the day felt up to that job.
I’m in no way defending the lack of response from our players and wish they had confronted Keane, but I think they were in a state of shock and concern for their teammate. The game was petering out into a welcome nil nil, Keane was being sent off (and they wanted to maintain that numerical advantage to confirm the draw) and there was no buildup of adrenaline prior to it just an out of the blue unexpected and unnecessary challenge. Wind the clock back and I am sure many of them wish they had reacted differently.

I really like the way Micah handles him by just laughing at his grump old man schtick. Sometimes I think some of them like Neville are still intimidated by Keane but Micah just sees the funny side of it. And you just know Micah would fold the guy in half and use him as a foot stool if it ever came to it.
