The battle for 3rd place

Improvements from last season

- Best top flight away record in the entire history of the club.
- Just 1 home defeat all season in all competitions.
- Not struggling to win back to back games.
- If we win our last 2 games we will record our joint third best ever points tally in the top flight after the 2 recent title wins.
- More competitive in the big games. A combination of missed chances and awful refereeing stopped us putting the performances into results.

Controversial

We played better this season in Europe than we did last season but Monaco were miles better than Kiev or PSG. Last season we lost home and away to Juve and didn't look like scoring once against Madrid over 2 legs. That's just cup football though. The luck of the draw.

Haven't read all 194 pages - So here is the question - Will City finish top 4?.
Tomorrow is a MUST win game. 'Pool are 3rd with one game to play next Sunday - home 'Boro.
Arse have 2 games to play - both at home - Sunderland and Everton.
City - WBA - home and Watford away.
I would expect 'Pool and Arse to win their games giving them 76 and 75 points respectively.
City on 72 points - win both we will have 78 points - 3rd place.
Arse 4th and 'Pool 5th.
Goal difference could play a part - if some teams do not win.

This is such a classic post by you. I don't get annoyed by it or anything, because unlike others I don't think you're deliberately trying to be overly negative, I think you're just a massive pessimist and it's quite funny seeing you take the worst possible conclusion from everything.

You see West Brom have the worst form in the league and think it's not relevant because some of their games they didn't completely roll over.

You see Pulis has a shit record against us and think that's a sign of impending danger, not proof that he doesn't deal with us well.

Yes, Pulis does have a very particular style of play, one that's seen his teams lose the last 5 games in a row to us, and lose 10 of the last 12 dating back to Mancini taking over, with an aggregate scoreline of 25-3 to us.

Pulis' team is on the beach, in the worst form of anyone, and he has an absolutely shocking record against us dating back 5 years. We're playing better, Kompany's back, Jesus has created a buzz and the crowd will be up for Zaba's last game.

None of this means we'll 100% definitely win, no game is ever 100% definitely a win, but it's probably going to be a win, so there's no need to panic about it. Liverpool and Arsenal aren't looking at this and thinking it's a banana skin for us.

1. Ha ha, I know, and duly acknowledged by me many times!
2. I was actually arguing the contrary (I put it as a plus point, not as a sign of impending danger), ie. Pulis is beaten mentally against us before we even start

@Exeter Blue I am here is a brilliant poster who i dont always agree with might i add but he takes the time and effort to put his views and opinions across in an intelligent way but like many at the moment, i cant help but feel he and they are tying themselves up in knots trying to find ways and excuses as to why we will lose a game of football.

As you say, history and evidence suggests we should win the game no problems.

Fully accepted mate and I think it's definitely gotten worse since our rise to the top. I thought I was gonna have a frickin' heart attack on Saturday every time Mahrez squared Clichy up on Saturday! As you say, there's no reason we should lose on Tuesday, but....... ;-)

I am not sure Monaco are that good. Juventus beat them comfortably.

I would agree we have improved a bit in the league. Last season we were in disarray at times. This season we have dominated most games, but have been unable to finish. We could finish between 6 and 12 points better off than last season. I also like the players we have bought, and they are going to be players who are going to improve and be around, hopefully for years to come. We need another good Summer and we will be ready next season.

He is. However our home record is not that convincing - Won 10, Drawn 7, Lost 1.

Juve stopped Barcelona scoring twice over two legs.

No shame in Monaco going out to them.

........
Next season, no excuses. None. Failure to win the league and or the champions league would cement Pep as a complete failure in the English game. A flat track bully if you like.

If we're not looking good for a title win by Xmas he would have to be replaced, no excuses. Failure to do so would prove once and for all that the club believes they are not big enough to take him on and that's not acceptable.

I'm truly astonished.........by this utter tripe!
I'm not sure many City fans agree with you but keep on spouting if it makes you feel good but i'm out thanks!

Unfortunately pal,you have just done exactly what he desires,by offering him a response/bite and, subsequently, the attention he so craves.

I am a bit surprised and I stress a bit that you replied to this.

I was keen for MP to go after the second season because I think he had made his mark on the side and could offer little more in season three but semi final in Chumps League and a top four finish was a pass mark and for obvious reasons it was inappropriate to not have him in charge at the start of the season.

If we improve the squad over the summer which I think we will no matter where we finish then some questions on Pep would need to be asked if we don't improve on our performance and results on a week to week to basis and don't improve in the areas Pep has identified where we lack sharpness and that is in both boxes as he puts it.

I thought we really should have beaten Monaco and would have done had we had Kompany and Jesus (fully fit). Juventus are a very wily side. Very difficult to beat, but in a one-off game, or over a tie, I think we'd run them very close.

You know your football mate and look, each to their own and certain styles of the game are not always going to be for everyone.

We have to let him get his players and if it doesnt work then, by all means claim it a failure but his history not just domestically but in the CL suggests that he knows his stuff and with a squad capable, the sky is the limit.

Agree marvin but our away record is brilliant which suggests the tactics are not some spectacular fail that some want to make them out to be and the issues at home have been some poor officiating and some dreadful and wasteful finishing along with some very poor personal defensive performances.

The squad will be upgraded this summer and i'm certain next season will see many of the issues we have seen gone.

Spot on.

It's not like we were grinding out these home draws either. We should have won nearly all of them including the game we lost.

Do you think he is the best RB we can get ? Will he be a value for money signing from Spurs ?

If he comes, he'll get my backing, but I think we can probably do better.

The best RB we could get no, but the best RB, who is English, young and yet with plenty of experience of the Premier League and at the top end, yes. It will be a silly premium I'm sure but that's the crazy world of the Premier League

Very much this for me and what we cant forget is the quota for English players that has to be fulfilled.

the quota for English players that has to be fulfilled
It doesn't have to be fulfilled though, it just leaves us a player short in the squad, but I doubt that would worry Pep too much.

Anyway my bigger worry is that Levy will demand a stupid price, and I just think we could get better, and better value, somewhere else.

I will be absolutely honest here mate and say that other than City and the PL, I watch very little football, especially European football and when certain names are mentioned in the transfer forum my first thought is "Who's that"?

I like Walker as a player but i've no doubt there is a better player out there but again, at what price (not that cost bothers me at all) and can we get them?

Whilst it's only his first year with the club, I would lying if I said I thought Guardiola has lived up to expectations thus far.

It's difficult to embellish a trophy-less season, in which the best we can hope for is third place.
