Never been that big on 'em, but in the last few months I decided to listen to a few of their songs and I'll be honest, you can understand why people make a fuss about 'em. I'm not too overkeen on some of the Hippie/Uber-Left stuff, but the majority of their work is class, whether it I Am The Walrus, Help or Hide Your Love Away. Being a big Oasis fan and knowing the connection just led me back to some of their tracks and I'm glad I did.

Thoughts on The Beatles?

Said this for years, few good songs, apart from that their just OVERATED.

put them in the music scene now and they would be nobodys, they had no competition back then, they don't do anything for me.

No competition!!

First they were the template for a group (3 guitars and drums) competing with male singers such as Adam Faith, Cliff Richards, Elvis etc. and with musical groups such as The Shadows and The Tornados (The father of Matt Bellamy of Muse was in this group)

Second they were the pathfinders in writing their own material - at the time other people wrote the songs for nearly all the performers

Third they also paved the way for making and selling albums rather than singles

Fourth we are talking nearly 50 years ago when technology was very poor and most stuff was recorded live and at most with 4 track recording equipment - just imagine what they would be able to do today if they were making their first album

Listen to the Rubber Soul and Revolver albums to hear where they got to in 3 years quickly followed by Pepper

Yes I grew up with them (I'm 57) but I was also into The Who, Doors, Moody Blues etc. and currently into Muse, Band of Horses, The Coral etc. so I'm to speed today as well, but there will never be another band who will have as much influence on music ever again

Long may they reign

You sound like you know the script mate.Good Post.

If you haven't lost yourself in the Beatles you have no right commenting on popular music. As an amateur guitarist and occasional songwriter I cannot but weep at the genius of 4 of the 5. I include the George Martin in the creative role call as he was as innovative as the other three. Ringo got the best girl which just goes to show there is no justice in this world.

The two stand out songs for me are :

and:

two example of the perfect pop song.

George has to thank Paul for the chord sequence from "For no one", James taylor for the hook and title Eric for the motivation and John for the arrangement.

So which are thought to be the average songs then?

Id nominate;

run for your life
dont pass me by
rocky racoon
fixing a hole
little child
dont bother me
revolution #9
only a northern song
old brown shoe
when i get home
why dont we do it in the road

not bad out of about 250 songs

-- Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:07 am --
