Had a discussion sat round a beer table in Salzburg last week about who was the best, The Beatles or The Smiths.

Night after in Munich, it carried on until it became a discussion about who was the best, John Lennon & Paul McCartney. All good stuff.

Haha. The Smiths. Absolute shite in comparison with The Beatles. A decent band in comparison with their contemporaries, though.

Prefer the smiths to beatles

I've never really 'got' the Beatles, sure they've done some good tunes but then so have The Doors. I much prefer listening to The Smiths (and The Doors) to The Beatles.

I can see the Beatles influence thing though, but imo compared to someone like Dylan they pale into insignificance.

Don't get the big deal about them song-wise or personality-wise. Got 'persuaded' into The Beatles museum in Liverpool by my then girlfriend, and I still came out thinking, 'yeah, I still don't get the big deal and they sound like a right bunch of tossers [for sacking Pete Best for Ringo fucking Starr]'. In my mind, they could never hope to occupy the pedestal they've got on deservedly. Maybe you had to be there, and I definitely wasn't. They're one of the bands though that I accept as great simply because of their influence. Just like Monty Python though, I much much prefer the offspring to the original.

The definition of a perfect pop song. To be fair, I could have picked any one from 30 or 40 songs. As a songwriting partnership Lennon and McCartney have no equals. As previously stated they did come up with the odd duff tune, but they were a tiny minority of their songs.

Absolutely love this song, but must admit when Lennon's voice goes high pitched right at the end it makes me cringe a bit, shame as the rest of it is fantastic.

I like the Beatles as a whole but I absolutely love George Harrison's songs (both when he was in the Beatles and solo etc) than all the others. I feel sorry for him, he was clearly talented but was pushed into the background because of McCartney and Lennon's huge egos.

Think For Yourself, Taxman, Within you Without you, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes the Sun = amazing

I love Georges songs too (have you seen the Concert For George dvd?) but I tend to think that in the early days he wasnt a songwriter, if he was they would have put less cover songs on the albums that L & M couldnt fill with originals, but being around 2 of the best brought out the creative side of him and in later years he started to get at least 2 songs on each album

Harrison is the only one I've followed since the break up of the Beatles I heard him give an interview where he said "he contributed lines" to several L/M songs, such as Eleanor Rigby and Norwegian Wood and he had more reason to be annoyed with L/M than they with him.

It's worth a listen, to his guitar solo on his song, Cheer Down at 2.30
