The Bert Trautmann Story

Missed it tonight

Just had a look and it's repeated tomorrow at 1am, 10am and 3pm

If you all want to leave feedback/comments about Bert I will print them off and show them to him.

Without a shadow of a doubt a stand should be named after him though very typically of him he probably wouldn't want it. He told me a story of Garry Cook offering him the chance to be an official ambassador for the club but Bert said 'Garry, what do you think I have been for the last 65 years'!

If this true it is quality and spot on!

The book by Catrine Clay goes into much more detail:

When it came out, I went to the book signing session in Manchester, and he had to be at the Trafford Centre at 3pm to do a signing there.

By 4pm I was near the back of the queue and he was still signing. When I got up to him, I said "thanks so much for waiting for us". He stopped signing the book and looked at me and said "Oh don't worry. I will have waited here until the last person gets their book signed."

I'm halfway through the book at the moment, and it's a really good read. Obviously it's a great story in itself, but it's far better written than most other football biographies I've read.

The documentary tonight was great. As others have alluded to, the term "legend" is banded about far too frequently, but is fully justified in this case. An incredible man.

My grandad use to tel me story's about a goalkeeper named bert trautman as he way he'd him at our town ground etc as I was a goalkeeper myself and I use to listen and not really understand until I got to kneo more about city as I grew up, after watching that I've got to say that man is THE legend not a legend, all that In his life etc is remarkable the club needs to honour him in a special way and I would love to meet the guy for just 2minutes!! A true gent and a real legend

Not only a great player but a great man too. Such a heartwarming story and such a great example to everyone.

Documentary was great - the club should get the squad together when they get back from International Duty to show them the footage of what it means to wear the city shirt.

I have to echo most comments on here. I found it fascinating. I knew about a little about Bert before that but what story. I bet the book is brilliant too. What a great guy, truly inspirational.<br /><br />-- Fri Mar 25, 2011 12:03 am --<br /><br />I have to echo most comments on here. I found it fascinating. If I remember rightly, and maybe someone can confirm this, there came a point when England wanted Trautmann to change his nationality so he could play for the England team.

I had forgotten that the 56 ref only had one arm, also great to see big Bill Leivers again.
