The Bert Trautmann Story

Get my user name from the time I went with the mrs to watch Germany train at Macclesfields ground during Euro '96. When the training was over all the kids watching ran over to Klinsman and co to get their autographs. I saw Bert standing at the side and made my way over to ask for him to sign my city shirt. He said "turn around und bend over". I thought f*kinell Bert I only wanted an autograph but bent over anyway, ready to take one for the club! Thankfully he only signed my shirt. Had a bit of a chat with him, absolute gent. The Mrs called me Bert's bendover for the rest of the day :-)

Without a shadow of a doubt a stand should be named after him though very typically of him he probably wouldn't want it. He told me a story of Garry Cook offering him the chance to be an official ambassador for the club but Bert said 'Garry, what do you think I have been for the last 65 years'!

Unfortuantely, nowadays players like Terry Butcher & Paul Ince only have to get a scratch on their heads, they get bandaged up, they play on and that makes them "heroes".

What an absolutely incredible man, with an incredible story. An utterly fascinating programme. The word legend isn't strong enough.

I know exactly what you mean mate but compared to some of the current lot they are! People like Drogba and Mario should be made to watch footage from that 56 final.

Heart warming. What a guy. When u hear about guys like that it makes u think that the term legend is used far too often these days and it takes away from true legends like bert. The south stand should be named the trautmann end, bollocks to the away fans who supposedly won't be able to find it, which has been an excuse for not renaming the stand after him previously . Operation one end: the Trautmann end

I really enjoyed that. He was my Dad's hero and now I truly understand why, I really want to read his biography now. Like someone else mentioned, it wasn't just the Cup Final story, he overcame so much adversity. It would be great if City named a stand in his honour. Legend.
