The Bert Trautmann Story

"im an englishman that was born in germany" quality... he has one cap for England as well don't you know

Wins the FA Cup with a broken neck, loses his son in a road accident, recovers and plays on Christmas day. Don't make em like that anymore.

What an absolutely incredible man, with an incredible story. An utterly fascinating programme. The word legend isn't strong enough.

but it isnt history is it ? well it cant be, we dont have any.
Actually we've purchased Bert's history from Bolton Wanderers. ;)

I too enjoyed it but felt it could / should have been longer.
No idea who the woman is who wrote the book, but I read his first book by Alan Rowlands.
It claims he was captured twice by the Russians and escaped twice, defying his officer who said they should remain captured and also he shot 'someone' in the woods when escaping (didnt know if t was a fellow German or a Rusky.... it was dark, he just shot and ran!).
Just felt it was rushed towards the end......... I wanted more..... very emotional programme, loved it....

The book by Catrine Clay goes into much more detail:
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trautmanns-Journey-Hitler-Youth-Legend/dp/0224082884" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trautmanns-Jour ... 0224082884</a>

When it came out, I went to the book signing session in Manchester, and he had to be at the Trafford Centre at 3pm to do a signing there.

By 4pm I was near the back of the queue and he was still signing. When I got up to him, I said "thanks so much for waiting for us". He stopped signing the book and looked at me and said "Oh don't worry. I will have waited here until the last person gets their book signed."

Heart warming. What a guy. When u hear about guys like that it makes u think that the term legend is used far too often these days and it takes away from true legends like bert. The south stand should be named the trautmann end, bollocks to the away fans who supposedly won't be able to find it, which has been an excuse for not renaming the stand after him previously . Operation one end: the Trautmann end
