Haha, I think I probably jibbed it then.

But I'm pretty sure I didn't have to pay on the Hamburg underground, and when I went to Berlin, I remember glimpsing some machines that might have those 'self-service' machines, but I wasn't there long enough to inspect them: I just hopped on the train.

You have to pay on both of those underground networks, they just operate on the honour system and therefore don't have ticket barriers. You'd still be liable for a hefty fine if caught by a ticket inspector.

Not paying and thinking, public transport is for free..where in the world....
it costs 80 euros, if they catch you
