The best Red wine.

It's not a valid question which the OP poses in my view. Everyone's tastes are different, as evidenced by the replies to date.

My advice would be to try different grape varieties in the first instance, find one you like. Then try wines made from that grape from different regions until you find one you really like. Also, try different vintages as this will also affect the quality and taste. When you find one you like, buy as much of it as you can afford.

Or, go to a wine merchants and do all of the above in one afternoon then place an order.

Or, go to a Three Wine Men (Google it) and try loads of wines all in one place.

Or, join a wine club and try different wines every month or quarter.

I like wine :-)
I am also a wino and that is good advice.

Some years ago, I went to a wine seminar hosted by a local wine shop. Their guest speaker was. Little Frenchman, a winery owner from Bordeaux. He told us, "It didn't matter the price or if other people like it. If you like it, it is good wine."

Two of my favourites for more "everyday drinking" are Coppola Claret and Faustino Gran Reserva (Faustino VII is less dear but not quite as good but still OK imo.)

I have tried Pétrus. I liked it very much. Can I afford it? No.

I'm not sure she'll appreciate being called a wino :-) had a bottle of chateau pétrus once, very nice, would I spend £500 of my on money on one ? No

I wouldn't hold out much hope for the Tesco stuff mate (sorry - and hope to be proved wrong). Ascheri and Fontanafredda are decent Barolo producers in the £25 to £35 range.

But then again, at that price you can get some spectacular Italian wines - if Italian is your thing (it is mine!).

You can get a very decent bottle of Taurasi - from Campagna in Italy, made from 100% Aglianico grapes grown on the volcanic soil surrounding mt Vesuvius, which imho knocks the stuffing out of any Barolo in this price range:

And if you can find it anywhere, the "Refosco dal peduncolo rosso" from La Viarte is made from the fairly unusual Refosco grape and is indescribably delicious.

I'm on this tonight.

Barolo Riserva Terredavino 2004. £24

It's pleasant, but im still sticking with my golden reserve as being the best!!! Have any of you lot tried it? Sometimes I think this is some grand bluemoon conspiracy at suggesting wines for me to drink in the name of research, whilst you guys laugh at me!!!

I'm heading over to the conspiracy thread.

2004 and £24 does not bode at sll well mate. As I've said, Barolo is expensive stuff and for that age it should be more like £100+ and probably £200+ were it any good. This is my problem with Barolo, it can be absolutely superb - one of the world's finest wines - but it's a rich man's tipple.

Yep, I'll wait until someone buys me a bottle if I need to spend that much! I've had $100 bottles of wine given to me, and I didn't notice much difference between a good $30 bottle and it. $30 is normally around my level of I'm buying (Hence my golden reserve fixation).

I hadn't really thought about your Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec and I've had the Trivento cooking Malbec and thought it was a bit meh. But looking at the Golden Reserve, I see it gets 90+ points in most reviews, so I am not surprised it's pretty fine stuff.
