The big clearout!

You say 12 gone which seems an immense amount of players to replace, however

Hart, Nasri, Bony, Mangala, Denayer haven't kicked a ball for us this season

Navas, Vincent, Fernando and Delph have been very much on the periphery and we could easily have coped without them. So that's nine for a start
One of Bravo and Willy need to go and be replaced with a proper number one goalkeeper

I would keep one of Zabba or Sagna

Toure is finished at the highest level of the Prem. If he does move to West Ham or similar, it'll be interesting to see how he performs with players not as good as ours around him
I've a feeling it'll be similar to rio ferdinand when he went to QPR and be a bit of a disaster

So apart from a new CF I think you're right in what's required

The major fact is that the four new defensive signings have to be first choice players
GK
LB
RB
CH

I agree with you but we need to offload Hart, Nasri, Bony, Mangala, Denayer, Fernando and Delph which wont be easy.

Hart and Nasri easier than the others but we will have to hold a raffle for Bony.

I would also put the defence and GK as the priority but will Pep.

Does a clear out mean we can use our favourite excuse of 'transition' next season if it goes belly up?

There's this accepted wisdom that Txiki and the club could just go out there and build a squad for Pep whist simultaneously having another coach actually manage the team. For me that's also a little far fetched. I do think that there have absolutely been transfer failings, as there are at all clubs, but for me the key point is that when it comes to the crunch I want Pep choosing/buying the players he wants. Not Txiki and Pellegrini or Txiki and Mancini. For that to happen we needed Pep at the club.

I also think that there's another point of view which will say. Kolarov, Zabaleta, Clichy, Hart, Toure, Kompany, Nasri, etc have all served the club incredibly well and the club has eeked every bit of value out of them as footballers. I daresay that they have all had their finest footballing moments playing for us and during their time at the club we've won more than we almost ever had previously. Sure we could've/should've replaced some of them in the summer of 2014 or subsequently, but had we done that and signed more Mangala/Bony types we'd be sat here now with even more wasted dead wood to shift. The point is having Pep will afford you access to better players so it's best to wait until you have Pep to have the type of rebuild we're currently in the process of.

I think it was inevitable that many of the necessary changes to the squad had to wait for Pep to be in post. Pep could form opinions from afar but there is not substitute for working with players on a daily basis. I also assume that having so many players near the end of their contract was a factor in us waiting until the coming summer to make certain changes. People can argue all day about whether the approach taken has been the best long-term one but what matters now is that major surgery is undertaken in the forthcoming transfer window. The players are out there that can quickly turn us back into England's top side.

As one of the best teams in the world we are also one of the most erratic, on our day we can out play Barca or on another we could get hammered; we can go to Stoke and thrash them or we could just not turn up and get beat. I cant think of any other top club who are so unpredictable.

You never know how we will play no matter who we are playing, players with form which can change on a game by game basis is difficult to understand or account for. Feel it's a motivational / mentality issue within the squad that has crept in over time and needs clearing out.

We are not ruthless like say Barca or Bayern who routinely hammer sides when they are on top, they dont settle for 1 or 2 goals, they try score as many as they can. We are a soft touch for such a good team, any team on their day must fancy their chances if they get a little lucky and this gives every team hope when they play us. Teams dont turn up thinking they are already beat, because they always get a chance, this gives them something to fight for and makes things more difficult for us, maybe why it feels like we are so many teams cup final.

Any new players we bring in I hope has a fighting team spirit and hunger to always do their best to help address the above. We need to strive to be the best we can be, not just accept being a top 4 club like Arsenal.

Gk, CB and a fullback for either side are a must and would be a huge improvement to the team. Anything more than that is a bonus for me.

I don't see getting rid of players like Nasri, hart, mangala, bony, navas as being a problem there is enough teams in china full of cash wanting to waste it on foreign stars that have played in the prem!

It's just a more acceptable way of saying we are fucking garbage this season- it's been garbage for the two seasons before this one aswell.

I wouldn't expect miracles next season either-we are a long long way off at present- let's just hope the likes of Chelsea , Spurs and United don't spend a fucking carrot between them- we might actually make some in roads to compete properly against them- or have to watch this glaringly spineless team we have to watch week in week out at the minute.

The Mark Hughes team with Robinho was erratic. This City team is characterised by inefficiency in defence and attack, and a lack of power in midfield. We're in transition. We have a goalkeeping situation. Our Captain has vanished. Toure, probably the key player from the Mancini era, is hanging on. Aguero looks like he's lost a yard. We have full backs who are well past it.

On the other hand we have some outstanding players. We need to replace the older players, and when that happens, we can expect consistency and success. Why not? I find it very hard to believe that City will not massively upgrade our defensive potential in the Summer, and likewise given Guardiola's comments about the finishing I expect another striker to come in alongside Jesus. The base is 4th spot at the moment and Champions League last 16, an FA Cip semi-finalists. That's not bad for a squad that is really past it and in transition. Tells me we will be very much better next season though of course this is football and there are no guarantees.

I really would like to know how this group of players started the season so well and then deteriorated. I think the intensity with which we started those games slowly evaporated. Perhaps if we were in Leicester's shoes last season, or Liverpool and chelsea's this season we could have kept it going.
