If you're really stuck, Sainsbury's are always on the lookout for overnight staff. Money ain't bad, but the hours are a woman!

Just wanted to make other recent graduates aware of something I ran into the other day.

I'd seen marketing management opportunities being advertised online, and as all the training is provided on the job I thought it was a sound direction to head in. I was first invited to a building on Cross Street in town on Tuesday, a barely furnished office full of other graduates waiting to be seen. I then had a talk with the 'director', who gave me a very vague and rapid break down of what the work actually entailed. Still confused, I left after the discussion but was invited back next day to have an actual interview at 9am. So I was there for then, but instead was taken out on a "field tour" to see what the job was. It was face to face sales, punting gas quotes to the public all day in a Tesco in Salford. I had to finance my own travel and food, which I wouldn't have minded but I wasn't even warned about going anywhere, I thought I was there for an interview. £4 an hour unless you get commission and 48 hours a week. They harped on all day about the rapid promotion rate, but got arsey and evasive when I asked where the other employee levels were and if I could ask them stuff (I only met the director and people who were one level above where I would have been - and you don't get off sales until you are third tier). I finally got my interview just before 7pm and smashed it regardless, but as I had signed nothing I decided to opt out as it had all the hallmarks of a pyramid recruitment style. I was supposed to be there this morning and they never contacted me, which speaks volumes. I just don't want anyone to waste the time that I did, by going for a job that isn't what it was advertised as.

and Ethan - if you're into media mate, try Searchlight, that's a media agency. Also the Unit List on Facebook advertises media jobs, sometimes even day work. ITV/BBC usually have quite a bit of stuff on the go. I was a VOD Scheduler at Sky On Demand for a while, and as a History graduate I can say that you should be in good stead especially with a media degree

Found myself in desperate need of work. Graduated from uni last summer, and managed to find some part time retail work to tie me over. Just been informed it's now coming to an end. Literally have no idea what it is i want to do!
Well, for a start, what degree do you hold, and what did fancy doing for a living, when you were a kid?

Media production degree...and when i was a kid?... Fancied playing for City ha... Never really known what it is i wanted...only just turned 22 mind

22? - with your forward-looking Bluemoon handle I can see you're already one step ahead of the game...

something I'd suggest is grabbing any Martin Yate books down your local library; the guy lays it all out, everything you need to know including a process for landing a job that you want (and are not over-qualified for) within 3 months... he covers all the angles and everything you need to ensure job-seeking success.

*and he explains why what he recommends works; he's the David Silva of interview & recruitment authors

best of luck!

(although if you implement a Yate plan you'll not be needing any)

Just came across this, looks like a relatively good opportunity for any grads/soon to be grads:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join us for a 12 month graduate post helping to drive forward a range of marketing and policy work.

Tameside Council is one of ten Councils in Greater Manchester and this post is designed to offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work in a busy local authority which manages a budget of £390 million and delivers essential services to 220,000 residents.

The public sector, and in particular local government, have all hit hard by cuts to public spending. Tameside as a Local Authority faces big challenges, having experienced funding cuts of over 42% over the last five years, and we continue to face significant reductions in funding.

Despite this Tameside is still very much open for business and looking to the future with energy and ambition, and the local authority is constantly looking for new ways to work with local people to build better services for our communities. We are at the heart of reform across the sector and are positioning ourselves to make the most of future economic growth across the Grater Manchester conurbation.

We are currently putting together ambitious plans to promote all that Tameside and Greater Manchester have to offer and are looking for somebody to join our Policy function to help drive this work forward.

You will be at the cutting edge of developments across the sector and will gain a wide range of skills and experiences. We would particularly welcome applications from those who are interested in putting forward ideas, constructing supporting arguments and actively evaluating evidence.

You will be expected to work independently as part of a busy team, working closely with Senior Managers, Elected Councillors and Partners such as the Police and Health Service. You will be supported and offered a structured programme of development aimed at supporting you in your future career.

Skills and Experience required:
• Ability to adapt and pick up new skills quickly and with minimal supervision
• Excellent writing and critical evaluation skills
• The ability to develop and present creative approaches to problems
• Knowledge of public policy and issues facing local government
• Ability to work independently and in a fast paced environment
• A strong academic background
• Good attention to detail

We are looking for the successful candidate to start working with us by early summer 2014.

The sequence of reactions of a disillusioned job-seeker:

- Leaps up in hope;
- Looks up website of employer;
(meanwhile...)
- Ponders upon total lack of bar experience (as in working behind, rather than drinking in);
- Ponders upon total lack of cocktail-making experience (similar to above);
- Shakes head and decides not to even bother applying.

(Edits post to bump for someone else.)
