Does anyone have any experience of online assessments for graduate jobs?

I have just finished my degree in electrical and electronic engineering (hope to get a first) and I am contemplating applying for some graduate jobs. I have also worked in the semiconductor industry for 13 years.

I am just after what is entailed with the online assessments for graduate jobs and if anyone has any tips to do well in them.
Don't have any experience in that, however if they show you a blank piece of A4 paper, then beware, they're after some nonsense about seeing your future etc, etc.....

I've applied to a lot of grad/grad internships, not the same industry, but happy to shed some light on what my experiences were if you have any specific questions.

In my experience it has been a case of
- applying online (filling out relevant forms - sometimes its just CV's and education history (etc), sometimes they ask competency questions)
- Then I got sent online tests. One was logical reasoning - this is where you are given a series of images and you have to chose what the next image in the series would be. Sometimes you get verbal reasoning, where you get a paragraph from a research journal or similar, and are asked a question about the text. And finally there is always a numerical reasoning test. Its quite simple maths (% increase/decrease, currencies etc), but the time pressures make it reasonably difficult
- Next step is a phone interview, usually done by HR. This is mostly about why the industry, why the company, why the specific role, why I'd be good (etc)
- Finally an assessment centre/interview day. These usually take up the whole day, and you'll be interviewed by 4/5 people, have to do a presentation. Mix of technical questions, competency questions, etc; and thoroughly exhausting.

I owe you one. I was looking for this thread last night but I couldn't find it and ended up spending two hours in The Cellar... not because I was searching for the the whole of that time but that I kept getting distracted by the various theads. Gave it another go earlier today, and your bump saved me making the same mistake. I'm currently serving my redundancy notice so you've been a big help!

I hope I can return the help, cheers.

I take it you've applied for something Dobo?

I've applied for two jobs in the NHS. One was an IT job which I don't have any academic background in but have learnt stuff on the job and self development. I didn't get an interview but found out that I came 10th out of 71 applications. Second NHS job I applied for I could of done with my eyes closed because I've done it in council for most of that last eight years in that organisation - I never got a response! I'm not too keen on doing that role for the rest of my career so never made enquiries. You can provide feeback after four weeks which incidently is tomorrow, so I will be professionally giving them a piece of my mind.

I've applied for two jobs that came up at my place. I failed an interview this week and still waiting to hear about the second job I applied for but doubt I will get anywhere with that as it's who you know where I work. So, gonna see if anything else comes up and then just sign up to an agency when I'm shown the door in five weeks time.

Oh, one thing I can contribute to this thread is in regards to the NHS Jobs site. Vacacancies are put on the site on a daily basis, but from doing research i've found they tend to favour applicants who are already in the NHS. So even though joe public can access the site it's mainly so staff in different hospitals can see what is available. Not that I am complainging though, and still worth applying because their new recruitment website is brilliant. Once you have done one application you can use the details (barring 'Supportin Information' section) again for anything else you want to apply for.

N.B. Just make sure you write no more than a 1000 words in the Supporting Information section. I looked all over the site four times to see if there was a word limit, but could not find anything! And so I had written 250 words for each criteria and ended up with around 4000 words. It was not until I tried to submit my application that the site turned red and told me about the 1000 word limit and thus would not let me submit the application! I managed to edit it in time, but it was note fun!
