Not my favourite CH song by any stretch though I think Neil Finn writes great pop songs. Equally, though I like all the later stuff Cash did with Rick Rubin, as good a cover as it is I'm not sure it adds a lot over the original albeit there's a bit less fannying about.
Cash's voice does sound on those last recordings like it's absorbed the collective pain and wisdom of the world. So that'll probably tip it.
Went for crowded House as without the video Johnny Cash version of Hurt is not as powerful.
One of those songs where the video and Cash not having a long time on this earth made the song a lot more powerful than it was without.
On one hand I really should stay local, with a true Kiwi icon ( that the aussies sort of stole, as usual. Actually in this case it's a bit more complicated than that so I think we'll have to call it antipodean icon.)
On the other hand this is an astonishingly good cover, one of the best. I've never been a particular Johnny Cash fan but this one changed my mind completely. Even Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails admitted that Cash totally owned the song. The song is immense but the video makes it so much more powerful, with clips of his life.
It's the Man in Black beating the home of the All Blacks today
Toughie, this. Both good in their own right, both different enough. Might go based on what part they played for me at a given time, as opposed to objective song quality.
