If my son had a say Cash would get the vote. He doesn’t though so it’s Crowded House. Great band, great song

Not sure how Crowded House can be neck and neck with this. OK the cash song is a cover but it's Johnny Cash and he's not incapable of originality. He absolutely nails this and it's a brilliant song even before one of the all time greats sings it practically on his death bed giving the lyrics and even greater meaning.

Good as Cash is on this he was by then Jaded old country singer with a religious obsession singing a cover versus a young band creating their own unique sound at the start of their careers.

Yep. Somebody said earlier that they didn’t see why this Crowded House song was so popular.

Is it the masterful chorus, verse, melody and world class organ solo? In the 80s and 90s, Neil Finn wrote some of the best melodies and middle 8s since The Beatles. Versus a cover? Absolutely no contest.

I don't think the cover aspect played much into my thinking here -- especially with Cash, who covered a bunch of stuff and made a lot of covers his own. I just prefer this particular Crowded House song to this particular Johnny Cash song. Were it, say, "I Walk The Line" vs., say, "Something So Strong" I'd vote for Cash.

Of all of CHs big hits I think this is the one I'm least attached to. There's a few of their other songs that might have tipped it in their direction for me but this isn't one of them. The man in black and his by then fragile but still elemental bass-baritone gets my vote.

The irony being that June went first albeit Johnny followed a few months later. There is something almost voyeuristic about the video but it is incredibly compelling.
