The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

I am love the Stones, but 10cc are clearly the better song here, even if (for some unknown reason) a live version of that song is used against the studio version of the Stones song. Surely, both songs should be treated equally.

Gimme Shelter is an ok song that starts and ends strongly, but just meanders in the middle. It’s the last throes of the Stones wanting to be a serious band, before their 50-year long fade away into being their own tribute act.
10cc for me.

I’m not even that big a fan of the Stones but this post is — well, awful. Shelter was 1969 — three years before Exile on Main Street, widely considered one of the best records ever made. It’s 9 years before Some Girls — another tremendous album. And I’m sure true Stones fans would have plenty to say about the other two dozen or whatever records they’ve done in the 54 years since this came out. And “meandering” is a good word — when applied to “I’m Not In Love”, which is exactly what I assume is the intent.

I’m not really an enormous Stones fan, a lot of their stuff is a bit meh to my ears. But I do think they have about a dozen fabulous tracks and this is probably their finest for me.

I’d say it has 3 amazing iterations:
The original, where Merry Clayton and to a lesser extent Richards were the stars of the show.

The second, and for me greatest, was the version they played live from 72-74 where Mick Taylor turned in some of the most sublime playing I’ve ever heard, night after night. Just check out the bootlegs if in doubt.

Finally there was another great later version I’ve heard/seen where Lisa Fischer on vocals made it memorable all over again. IIRC there’s a recording from Twickenham of this version.

I am a big fan of the Stones - I'm already clutching the new album but it will have to wait until tomorrow mornig's journey up to Manchester - and you are spot on about Exile and Some Girls. They have also produced plenty of good songs since then but "Gimme Shelter" one of their finest moments (I Hear You... is also awesome).

Nicely tied in there Peace & Love - 10CC is a very enjoyable track, but it does just that, meander.

With that being one of the reasons to downplay the stones, nail on head with your post..........

I'm not a fan, so don't forget it.
It's just a silly phase I'm going through.
And just because I vote you up,
Don't get me wrong, don't think that's going to be enough.
I'm not a fan, no no, it's because...

I like to see you, through again,
That doesn't mean I think you're better than the Stones.
So if I vote you, don't make a fuss -
Don't tell my City mates about what I've just done.
I'm not a fan, no no, it's because...

I refresh this thread way too much.
It hides a wish I'm strangely hoping for.
So don't you ask me to care too much.
I know this vote doesn't mean that much to me.
I'm not a fan, no no, it's because...

Ooh, you'll wait a long time to see.
Ooh, you'll wait a long time.
I'm not a fan, I'm not a fan...

Yeah, this song is suck in my head today... WTH? ;-)
